Thought I'd bring this thread up as the following has appeared at the top of Media Guardian's website...
Edit: There is now an article at http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/aug/26/big-brother-dropped-channel-4

Isn't exactly the best time to with still 10 days to go of one series, a celebrity series and a summer series. Im just wondering if this is a ploy so they can get the BB license back cheaper for a few years, run the franchise down and rescue it from the burning flames kind of thing. Saying that Endemol are trying, apparently its Channel 4 that's at fault all the time, between scheduling, controversys (The N word was said many times in the house this year according to one housemate, this has never been reported) and advertising (just dire). I really do hope it dosen't leave Channel 4. It's too expensive for Sky, too low brow for BBC. ITV I don't know, it would pick it up I think. It would fill the 10pm hour, you have ITV2 for sister shows, it does seem a good fit, I just shudder at the thought of it because of Love Island.

This was thought to be done just to turn up the price C4 would pay for it.
Didn't ITV express interest in Big Brother a few years back just before Channel 4 signed this current deal with Endemol?

No one in their right mind would touch BB now.
Caught a glimpse of it last night, waiting for Charlie Brooker.
Some silly blonde moo sticking arrows on a map to indicate countries - she thought Africa was the UK, and that Sweden is near Iran.
Once again, the 22 year old producers think it's a laugh riot to pick the dumbest, blondest bimbos to fill the house... because *that* will make for months of entertainment.
The only relatively smart chap was, unfortunately, a waffling arrogant twit (halfwit) - so I couldn't bear to listen to him.
So far I've seen about 40 minutes of the show this year.
Its finished.

To be honest Gavin, the show was finished in 2002 when Kate Lawler won. That was the best the show ever was, and it should have bowed out gracefully then. Sadly, the producers decided to make it even more controversial and try different ideas that never really worked.
Good riddance.

I suspect you are right, Gav, as far as the 5 main channels are concerned. I don't see ITV or Five picking it up, but perhaps we'll witness a lingering death on Sky1 or Living?

Fact is it is pulling in ratings, whilst low, they are ratings. It's working out how to best use the format to fill a channels schedule. Channel 4 aren't making the most of what it could do. I could imagine Sky taking it, even rebranding or launching a Sky only Big Brother channel with replays of the evening show and live coverage etc. I can see it becoming a 24 hour event like in the golden years.
I watch it, my partner watches it, my parents are addicted. We all watch it either live or recorded on the Digital+ box. For me it's must see TV, I still find this sorta TV attractive to watch and would be willing to change TV supplier from UPC to Sky if it meant continued coverage. Someone will take this up. 2 million viewers are out there and willing to consume the content.
