Earlier this morning Big Brother posted the following article on the website:

Quote:
Glyn had his first confessional with Big Brother this morning when he popped his Diary Room cherry.

Asked to collect some batteries, Big Brother took the opportunity to tell him off for speaking Welsh with fellow dragon, Imogen.
"But Welsh is British," he countered.

"It's not English and could be considered to be talking in code," asserted a schoolmasterly voice.

Sixth-former Glyn then revealed that he felt spoilt as all his friends were at school doing their A-levels, while he was in the House.

Don't worry Glyn, you'll be gagging for the safety of the exam room in a few nights. Now, no talking, please...

Now, this didn't go down very well with us here in Wales - and it's 17 pages and counting on Digital Spy .

Hence, later this afternoon the article was removed and replaced with this:

Quote:
After wondering whether speaking Welsh was allowed in the House, Glyn was called into the Diary Room for a head-to-head with Big Brother.

"Housemates are free to talk in any established language of their choosing," clarified the masterly voice.

"However, any discussion, in any language, that is deemed against the rules will result in Housemates being punished. Glyn, Big Brother is multi-lingual and is always listening."

So, no cheeky speak with Imogen when times get tough, eh Glyn?

A true dictator in action - but though they were incredibly wrong in the first place, credit to them for backtracking

If Welsh is Glyn's first language and he is within the UK he should be allowed to speak Welsh freely within the house.

This could easily contravene European guidelines and been deemed racist aswell.

It wouldn't be difficult for BB Endemol to arrange a translator to make sure nothing under-hand is going on.

But i'm sure all of this was intentional by BB!

Mind you it would be useful having a Big Brother in all those backward little tea shops in the west where they do this sort of thing on purpose.

And now coming to England imposing his code on everyone, they should send someone to set fire to his house.

All three Welsh news programmes this evening are pouring over this.

Is it just my Freeview box or does nobody else's red button work when "Live" and a red button appears on E4?

Only appeared now again though.

I'm sorry no. Channel 4 is an English language channel. You don't see people going on Deal Or No Deal and speaking Welsh do you?

Presumably it is in the rules that housemates must only speak English. If it's not, don't forget that Big Brother can change the rules at any time.

It's a ridiculous suggestion that there should be a translator available at all times when all housemates are perfectly capable of speaking English.

Mine didn't work until I re-scanned and got channel 305 - the location of the feed required for the red button to work.

I wouldn't mind if he took the other one with him too (Richard).

And on a similar vein, is Pete straight?

Reading that thread makes me think of the attitude that my sister encountered when she briefly lived& worked in Wales last year. She encountered a lot of people who refused to speak English to her when they were perfectly capable of it. It was one of the reasons why she quit the job and came home. I'm not totally sure what this attitude the Welsh have towards their language seems to be about at all. Obviously, I don't have anything against Welsh speakers talking in their language at all, but the way some of them freeze and refuse to talk English (especially if you are English) just baffles me.

I'm sure if it was a Welsh language version of Big Brother and two contestants were Native English speakers and had been told not to converse amongst themselves in English, then the attitude would be totally different.

There was a slight glitch again before BBBM, picture froze, momentary "Programmes follow shortly" caption; froze again at start of ad break and stayed stuck that way until after a while, when it headed straight into BBBM without an ident.
