Wouldn't he lose out on either £50,000 or £100,000? If he wins, he will walk away wth £100K, £100,000 less than he could have potentially, whereas if he doesn't he's lost out on only £50K?
I think that the point that Brekkie Boy is trying to make is that if Eugene had refused the £50k he would be almost assured of winning overall (therefore winning £200k). By taking the £50k, he is reducing his chances of winning by appearing to be greedy and the prize fund is reduced, therefore in total he would be losing out on £150k.
