I came to that conclusion based on my watching of old episodes of The Big Breakfast hearing certain jokes, seeing certain characters and thinking that would probably be considered racist, sexist, homophobic and just unsuitable for breakfast television nowadays sadly.

I am not familial with Johnny Vaughan's recent work.

So it's merely hypothetical, I see.

What did you think? I had access to a time machine and was reporting from the future? Of course it was hypothetical.

I know but I think it's an unwarranted fear and even if you're right, that's a good thing not a bad thing.

It sounds like you've missed the point of The Big Breakfast, David. It wasn't "considered suitable" in the 90s either - it was bold, loud, brash and sometimes a bit edgy; exactly the opposite of the offering from TV-am/GMTV and BBC One.

I don't know what could be considered racist - could you substantiate that?

I don't think I am missing the point. I watched and enjoyed The Big Breakfast throughout the 90s too. I have several episodes on tape, some of which I have watched bits of quite recently (it's easy to forget about the rubbish filler bits like Snap, Cackle and Pop, Route to Midnight etc. I fast forwarded through those). I just don't think The Daily Mail and Twitter users would allow the programme to be the same nowadays. I'm not sure even Channel 4 are as brave as they once were either.

Remember, I am not saying The Big Breakfast or Johnny Vaughan were or are racist. I am saying that some of the things said and done on the programme may now be considered racist especially if viewed on YouTube as a short out of context clip spread by Facebook and the tabloid press, which is how things are judged nowadays.

There was certainly an anti-German vibe when a story warranted it during the paper review and I remember I first heard the phrase "Spanish shower" on The Big Breakfast too. I am aware these are pretty poor examples, it was just a general feeling of 'they wouldn't get away with that today' that I got from watching old episodes.

Ah I see what you mean a little better. Meh, I don't see how the example given was at all critical to the success of the show.

Johnny Vaughan was on Richard Bacon's show yesterday and said that he would love to do it if he got asked.

I don't think he would be able to present the show in the same way in 2012 as he did in the 90s. If he did, it would probably be considered racist, sexist, homophobic and just unsuitable for breakfast television. Things have changed so much since then.

What a load of nonsense. He's been suitable enough to spend the last 6 years doing mainstream breakfast radio.

As I said, I am not familial with his recent work but I assume, like most people, he has changed during the past 11 years as has television. I don't think introducing records on local radio can be compared to presenting a largely unscripted national television programme anyway.

Strange that he, Evans and Bacon have all transitioned between the two.

Thank you. I blame blindly choosing the first alternative that Google suggested based on my attempt at spelling familiar. Twice.

Bacon isn't a DJ (as far as I know), he presents a show on BBC Radio 5 Live. They play very few records. It's not really strange though, is it? I could name hundreds of television presenters who have gone on to do radio, and vice versa of course. When asked how to get in to radio, Iain Lee recommends getting your own Channel 4 show as the first step.

I don't think its accurate to say "most people change" over 10 years, as you suggest. Its just not my experience at all.

I'd say that as a person matures they behave in a more reasoned and less extreme way, if anything.
