Brookside was a total mess the last few years. Maybe they should have tried going back to basics rather than going even artier and more sensational. Wasn't there a siege, helicopter crash and a lynching all in the space of the show's final year? The first episode to be blighted with the film effect had one kid killing another. Really stretched beyond believability, though the other soaps seem to have been taking that path more recently as well- makes you appreciate the simpler, gentler 1980s Corries on ITV3.

I thought Brookside ended because it was being moved all over the schedule due to Big Brother.
Was more down to increasing episodes of Coronation Street, EastEnders and specifically The Bill than Big Brother that it moved about, plus as Steve says there was a reason it wasn't holding an audience in primetime. As is often the case though it did seem to improve once it was axed and effectively became a 90-minute feature length edition every week and perhaps it could have survived longer in a weekly hour-long 9pm slot. However it probably went at about the right time.
Going back to the final episode of The Big Breakfast - Despite Richard Bacon desperately trying to keep control of the show and keep himself in the spot light (in the hope another TV station would snap him up and give him a job) it did sum up what the show was all about. It was a show that really didn't give a S**T. And that is why it was so popular. It didn't care if it offended people, the style of the show mean that even the less talented presenters fitted in (just) Imagen how awful the Rick/Sharon and Richard/Amanda presenting combination would've been on any other show. The show wouldn't work today because people get offended to easily and and TV station would be to scared to make something which was always so borderline innapropriate and controversial.
Yes, I think you're remembering a different programme to me, Chris30.
The Big Breakfast was a bit of a maverick in many ways but 'always so borderline inapropriate and controversial'?? No, it was a family friendly infotainment show that just did it in an original way. There was nothing I wouldn't want my kids to watch
The last edition did push the envelope a bit at times I seem to remember, but that's because it had been axed and they had nothing to lose. But even that more cheeky than inappropriate.
V sad to hear that our neighbour Trevor Baylis passed away last night. Inventor of the wind up radio, national + Eel Pie Island treasure. pic.twitter.com/XK67NXf18b
Very sad news. Strangely I was watching Big Breakfast clips over the weekend wondering if he was still with us. Turns out he was but only just.
Trevor featured and made his name on more programmes than just The Big Breakfast but I can't be sure where. I'm guessing it might be Tomorrows World given his status as inventor of the Wind-up radio but I can't be sure. Eitherway he featured a lot in the media during the 90's though he probably became more well known through The Big Breakfast.
EDIT: After watching the obit report from BBC News, it seems that he started off gaining his name via Tomorrows World but also made occasional appearances on other programmes such as Good Morning with Anne & Nick.
His initial Tomorrows World appearance can be seen here:
