I agree - I don't think there was ever a need to look "tacky" and though it was bright and different to the alternatives, I think they were alot more design concious in the 1997-2001 era than the early days of the show where it was about being bold and brash. Times had moved on too and the BB had constantly struggled to do so - I do feel the 2001 look did move the show on nicely without compromising the core aim of the show.
Those Artful Dodger Xmas titles are a nice find - completely forgotten about them and though it's not the best edit in the world, it's better IMO than randomly using titles from a very different era of the show. Surely wouldn't have been too difficult to film some more seasonal themes too - outdoor shots could stay the same but replacing the morris dancer with Santa and the Elvis scene with a Christmas dinner scene would have done the job.
But not as well as the actual 2001 music which was brilliant in my opinion, and carried across well to the later titles.
As for the revamps, 1996 was trying to make a different show where as I feel 2001 was to just to give the programme a modern look. Content wise there wasn't much of a difference, obviously a lack of Vaughan features was the biggest change.

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks/thought that the 2001 revamp was awful? It went from having quite a broad appeal to aiming at a very narrow younger age range.
I also really liked Rick Adams and Sharon Davies. Maybe it's me that's the strange one

This is a nice little thread that has appeared already pre-written!
How big was the gap between Chris leaving, Gaby leaving and then the 1996 revamp, did they persist with the original look for a time.
I have to say the 1996 revamp still using the by then dated 1992 stings and titles wasn't great.
I didn't watch that era, I skipped straight from 1995ish to when Johnny and Denise were in charge.

Gaby left in Jan 96. There was no revamp at all when Zoe started the next week. Maybe the aim was for some feeling of continuity? (Gaby left on Jan 12th 1996 and coincidentally Johnny and Denise left on the same date in 2001.)

Yes, the day after I think. He'd already cut down to just three shows a week - certainly I think for the bulk of 1994.
What was surprising with Chris leaving is they didn't take the opportunity to establish a new 5-day a week co-host for Gaby. Instead the split arrangement remained with I think Mark Little and Paul Ross sharing hosting duties, although Mark certainly became more prominent over time. Richard Orford started out as an in-house presenter a couple of days a week before switching with Keith on Down your Doorstep, and then I think him and Mark did full weeks at a time rather than 2/3 shows a week each.

Actually there were new stings, which were very well made, and made the lack of new titles all the more frustrating.
Here are two I could find on YouTube:

I think things went (roughly) like this, as regards male main presenters between 1994 and 1996...
Back end of Jan 94 - Apr 94:
Mon/Fri: Danny Baker, Tue - Thu: Chris Evans.
Apr 94 - Sep 94:
Mon/Fri: Mark Little, Tue - Thu: Chris Evans.
Oct 94 - Feb 95:
Mon-Wed: Paul Ross, Thu - Fri: Mark Little.
Feb 95 - Apr 95:
Mon - Tue: Paul Ross, Wed - Fri: Mark Little.
Apr 95 - Jun 95:
Mon-Wed: Richard Orford, Thu - Fri: Mark Little.
Jun 95 - Jul 95:
Mon - Tue: Keith Chegwin, Wed - Fri: Mark Little.
Jul 95 - Jun 96:
Mon - Fri: Mark Little. (Keith Chegwin did a lot of cover for Mark from Jul - Nov 95 due to Mark being at the Edinburgh Festival and on a comedy tour.)
...then Mark was axed, Keith stepped in and Rick Adams took over in Sep 96 for that rubbish revamp.

Paul Ross hosted inside the house far longer than I remembered then - I think all of Gaby's co-hosts other than Chris seem to be somewhat forgotten by history. Any surviving clips of Gaby and Richard Orford hosting together - he's the only one really who spans both peak eras of the show.
P.S. If you've an hour to spare:
