I remember the first Bigger Breakfast in May half term week 1997. The full-length opening titles had a longer version of the brand new guitar theme (launched that day) which took a while to build and was never heard again. .

I seem to remember this being posted on brekkie.com back in the day, unless i'm mistaken?

No it wasn't, and I don't recall a longer version of the guitar theme but I didn't really watch it much then.

There was definitely a longer version, as shown here - Though I only seem to think it made an appearance on menus and credits...

An extended version was used on The Bigger Breakfast's "still to come" out of break menus for a time, certainly during the first three or four runs of the strand. That was different to the longer version used only on the very first Bigger Breakfast though.

I thought Call and Collect didn't begin until January 1997, when the September 1996 revamp started to be undone.

The phone jingle was definitely used at the start of the Rick & Sharon era. I seem to remember they dropped the 'phone card in random locations' very quickly.

I think Call and Collect started with Rick and Sharon in the January before becoming part of Alien Alarm a few months later. Can't remember if the phone jingle was still used when Zig and Zag were doing the feature.

The phone jingle is pretty obviously part of the 1996 package though. Strange they kept it for so long despite several theme changes as it bears no resemblance to the actual BB theme (apart from the one element of the 96 theme)

They wouldn't have had Call and Collect on the show in September 1996 as they got rid of all competitions in the revamp. I think a Friday competition started to appear at some point in the October, with Rick Adams as some kind of barrow boy, then daily competitions and Call and Collect from the January.

The jingle must have made its debut in October 96 then. I remember watching it and noticing they had a new phone tune.

I think the Friday competition was called "It's All Gone Pear Shaped", IIRC.

Yes it was a precursor to Ooh What A Lovely Pair.

On the subject of that era, here's a pic from 1997 to show just how quickly the white house became grubby.

It's so awful. What they hell were they thinking? I'll still never understand why they took all the mistakes of the '96 revamp and then just repeated most of them again in '01...

96 was definitely the worst relaunch as, despite the huge (monstrous) work carried out on the house, there were elements that really needed changing (ie the titles/graphics) that were just rehashed and felt a bit last minute. At least in 2001 there was a clear and concise revamp which actually looked high end (although the choice of presenters was questionable).

I especially never understood the mentality of decorating the house in muted colours, as they did in both revamps. The '96 boudoir was particularly dreadful, and the beige of what had formerly been the hallway in '01 was awful as well.

The 2001 revamp was certainly a lot warmer in terms of colours though.
