Was Phil Gayle not on the programme at all, or just not the newsreader at the beginning? Maybe he was on the second shift?

The whole entire 9 hours (and a bit, because they overran!) was on Youtube until recently.

From memory, Kelly was newsreader all night apart from one or two when she was replaced by another woman, but I'm sure Phil wasn't present at all. I believe he may have got a mention on the show at some point saying he was in bed with flu.

Yes, he was taken unwell a few days prior. They referred to it a few days later when he returned.

I miss the days when TV wasn't afraid to be awful!
PFML84, Steve in Pudsey and Put The Telly On gave kudos

Awful TV, but a cracking theme tune.

Excuse the pun!

Can anyone tell me how Zig and Zag were shared between RTÉ and Channel 4? Did the voice actors fly between London and Dublin every day?

No. IIRC Tuesday and Wednesday's 'The Crunch' was done live. Thurs, Fri, and the following Monday were recorded - but tx'ed as live.

They way you could tell, was a drop in picture quality, as the tape play out machine wasn't exactly 'fresh out the box' in 92,
And as the feature straddle the Phone-in comp, Chris had to run from the garden up to the bathroom, in the live ones, he was usually out of breath and took around 15- 20 secs to arrive, but in the taped ones, he was up there far quicker and not so breathless.

There were times when Monday used to be Crunch pre-record day, plus the odd Thursday as well. Never seemed to be live on a Friday though. I cottoned onto the pre-recs one morning when Chris Evans started a long run back to the house from quite a distance away down the towpath, then when the VT played he just stepped into shot effortlessly a few seconds later.

Kelly did news the whole night IIRC.

I've noticed that the window behind them in the bathroom always has a blind covering it, presumably to cover the time of day it was recorded.

At 8.40 in this clip, why were they live "all weekend" as Chris Evans is saying?
