I can imagine The BIG Breakfast going as OTT with this as they often did with other big events. Everyone in the House would be wearing kilts and sporrans. The curtains at the French windows would be replaced with the Scottish flag. There would be a bagpipe band in the garden. Someone would be challenged to eat a full Haggis in 30 seconds for a prize. And of course there'd bound to be someone doing a spoof of the "FREEDOM!!!" speech from Braveheart!

Ah, but at least it hasn't turned in to the creepyness which the rota threads are in!

I guess both the times the show covered elections the show wasn't at it's peak (May 1997, May 2001) while the referendums on devolutions following the 1997 election were nowhere near the scale of the vote on Thursday.
Back in the nineties coverage would probably have been pretty much restricted to the news bulletins, probably slightly extended. They'd have been comment and references throughout I'm sure , but it was a show not driven by the news and quite happy to do their own thing.
Over the last decade though things have changed a bit and I suspect had the show remained on air how it covered events would have been quite different to the 90s - at the very least I suspect the newsreader of the day may have been let out of ITN's basement and sent to Scotland for the day, with the main "down your doorstep" OB also in Scotland. Difficult to say what the show would have done as it all depends on how it had developed and who was at the helm at the time - some hosts were much more capable at dealing with big news events than others.

I wonder how they covered Blair's win in '97? I have absolutely no recollection of it. Rick, Denise and Vanessa would've been presenting at the time.

They made a huge deal of John Prescott punching a protester in 2001, playing the clip the morning after into EVERY ad break, and then had an election special of Star Turn which incorporated a giant fist called the Prescott Punch.

It was actually Sharron Davies' last day. Doubt they'll have done that much, in any case.
yes she jumped into the art deco-style pool at the back of the House for her finale. Ironic that the Olympic swimmer appeared to drown on screen every day for 8 months
