I think Channel 4 News replaced the show for a few days didn't they? When the show returned it was certainly different, it wasn't as mad as it was during the summer. It did seem watered down for a few months.

Was definately replaced from the Wednesday to the Friday - I think that was kind of confirmation of the end as the show had remained on air after major news stories before and just been trusted to deal with them.

I wonder why they didn't want to risk it. Presumably they'd already decided that they didn't want to renew the programme.

At the time it was widely reported it was Channel 4 testing the water for a news-led programme.

I remember the first Bigger Breakfast in May half term week 1997. The full-length opening titles had a longer version of the brand new guitar theme (launched that day) which took a while to build and was never heard again. .

I seem to remember this being posted on brekkie.com back in the day, unless i'm mistaken?

No it wasn't, and I don't recall a longer version of the guitar theme but I didn't really watch it much then.

This is the version I remember:

Elements within the programme such as Snap, Cackle, Pop continued to use the 96 theme melody until it was relaunched as Snap!

Trivia quiz here... what was the longest running element of The Big Breakfast's 96 revamp, which lasted until Johnny & Denise left?

The pun down?

The pun down?

I don't think the pun down was around in Sept 96 was it? In any case, I was thinking about a musical element.

There was definitely a longer version, as shown here - Though I only seem to think it made an appearance on menus and credits...

I've noticed when watching editions with the Friday song I have on tape that the sometimes everyone can be heard singing along like in that Sam Robson clip and other times very faintly or hardly at all. I have a few with Johnny Vaughan where he yells at everyone for not singing loud enough and shouting 'louder' during each chorus!

I have no idea to Whataday's question either!

The answer is this...

Originally used for Call & Collect in September 96, then became the telephone theme when they very quickly stopped doing that nonsense with the phone card attached to landmarks/buildings around the UK.

Note the distinctive version of the melody that is used in the 96 titles. Used until early 2001.

I thought Call and Collect didn't begin until January 1997, when the September 1996 revamp started to be undone.
