I think I know the images you're on about and I believe that was a pilot/screen test for the 2001 revamp rather than the replacement show.

I remember pictures of a pilot that was filmed in the studio building behind the house, are those still available anywhere online?

The broadcaster has also agreed to see a fifth pilot, which is being paid for by Endemol Entertainment UK.
Endemol pulled out of the pitching process in September because its original idea would have cost more than Channel 4 was willing to pay.
But it has now re-entered the race with a new idea in partnership with ITN.

I get so curious about these things. For example, what did endemol propose that would have been so expensive for channel 4?

The budget of £12 million a year is not a lot to produce that much live television (in context, GMTV's budget was around £40 million at the time), so perhaps they required a lot of live news content, hence ITN's later involvement?

There were loads of people tipped to take the job at the time, as there had been previously when Chris Evans left. I think Robin Galloway would have been better than Rick Adams, but sitting next to Sharron 'Beige' Davies no one had much hope.

I wonder how 1996 might have turned out if Zoe had stayed - better than with Sharron for sure, but I just can't see her really working with Rick - though of course if Zoe had stayed Rick might not have been considered for the job at all. Did Zoe ever host with Richard Orford?

As Simeon Courtie points out at the Broom Cupboard website, when she left The Big Breakfast to take over Live and Kicking, she was supposed to be doing that with Rick Adams but they did a pilot and it was a disaster, so Adams didn't get the job - and was therefore free to join The Big Breakfast instead. So if Zoe had stayed, it would probably have been the other way round with Rick Adams on Live and Kicking.

He did on one occasion, I think when Mark was on an OB at a supposedly haunted house or something. I remember thinking the show worked better with Richard and Zoe together.
