I'd have thought they'd have managed it over a weekend considering there wasn't anything structural - they effectively get three whole days to redecorate and move a bit of furniture. Indeed I suspect with the 1996 revamp at least they probably didn't have much longer for the painting and finishing than that anyway.

Here is Johnny Vaughan briefly mentioning the changes to the house in September 2000 and the crew telling him that it was all done over the weekend. He also speaks to Lowsa, the new news reader. This video works. Ignore the doubters.

We also get to find out the reason that Vaughan has a bad back, of course none of the viewers of the show that day could ever realise that this would change the face of breakfast television as we know it for the next 4 days.

It doesn't work on my Android tablet, like all the others, but I'll watch it on my PC later.

Was this set up just for that bit or would the news have always come from there?

Such a mish-mash of graphics there. What titles were being used for that episode, as they are using cue cards with the 'b' logo and the news background is still in use with the lower case 'the big breakfast' logo, but the house and clock suggest the changes back to the old style have occured.

Also on the subject of that, what did they due during the refurb of the house back to the old style, or was it a weekender job?

There was a crossover period, where the 2001 revamp titles were in use alongside the new living room, new click/captions and new into/out of break stings, so 2 logos in operation. Why would anyone have sanctioned that, the old and new branding running in tandem?

A bit of a mess to say the least - would that have been the stings in the style of the final titles too. To be honest for all the "issues" with the 2001 revamp the only thing I'd say they really got wrong was replacing the logo - but I'm sure that could have easily been fixed on the titles by having the traditional logo form up at the end instead and editing out the "bb" logo by changing a couple of the wipe effects. The stings would have been trickier to change as they revolved around the "bb" logo more, but I do think the look could have been kept and like in 1997 they could probably have re-edited some old stings to suit (the Liza Tarbuck era ones would probably have worked).

I do wonder whether undoing the revamp was a decision by Planet 24 or C4. I suspect the former, and it's something that probably cost them in the long run as the 2001 revamp was much more in the style C4 seemed to be after for breakfast, while the "unvamp" was probably the show at it's boldest and brashest - though without the on-screen talent (and off-screen I guess) to really get away with it.

I get the feeling the living room isn't complete there. The carpet looks very bare there as in later episodes i have there's orange egg shapes on the red carpet in the living room.

I think they were just rugs, which are in the video above but in different positions on the carpet.

I remember when Richard was first drafted in after Johnny did his back in, he did a little tour of the new look bits of the house. He went through the new door off the phone room into the reinstated back hall and was about to show us all what was in the new room behind the living room. He was shouted down as he did this though and told not to show anyone.

I've got two Nexus devices, neither of which will show these videos. They work fine on PC though...

EDIT: Watched it on PC now. I wonder what was in that room where Baby Ben was (I'm sure there's a point where Richard tries to show it and gets stopped from doing so) and what was behind that blue door off to the right?

One episode I never saw, a few days before Johnny and Denise left, was where Vanessa was a guest. In a subsequent show, Johnny seemed to imply she'd been difficult but I've never known what she actually said or did.

Must say David you're not offering the most viewer friendly solution for your videos - people are struggling to get them to work. Youtube does work much better for embedded clips.
