As for the decorating, was the bigger breakfast set not at the top of the stairs? Or do you mean the other stairs?
I'm pretty sure it was at the top of the main stairs, as on Denise's last show she walks around the house saying her goodbyes and she says goodbye to Richard, (saying it still looks dreadful).
Also, if you look in this clip, you can see the circular window looks out onto the rear balcony. I think the circle was ripped out and replaced with french windows for The Bigger Breakfast some time in 1999.
Its location next to the rear balcony would place it directly opposite the main stairs.

You remember erroneously. Vaughan did return on Monday (he had put on loads of weight and grown a beard), Rogers was on her jack on Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday was Rogers and Dick Bacon. As I remember it, the next week, Vaughan and van Outen presented.

Interesting in that clip (the first day of the new graphics?) the sunburst appears under the new graphics and then quickly disappears. Its last appearance perhaps? Also who is that photo of just above the clock?
Yes, and against the blue news background, which I thought she'd never been seen alongside. I wonder how long until the news got purple graphics to match the rest of the show.
It wasn't too long after that they introduced the purple news background and yellow fake TV with even weirder 2 cameras which was soon dropped.
As for the decorating, looking at the clips you're right, the Bigger Breakfast must not have been upstairs until 1999, possibly the summer. Didn't they used to use the proper chairs, and then for a short time I remember some chairs that resembled egg cups were used at the bottom of the stairs in front of the door. I remember the end of a Vaughan fronte show where they linked up via the screen in the lounge despite them being positioned through the door on the left.

This may have been because one was pre-recorded and the other live. I seem to remember this being the case on some occasions.

I didn't realize they used the old furniture from the old look of the house on his first week back. I thought the blue widescreen tv and the yellow chair was introduced when he returned.
