The Big Breakfast

Where life used to start at 7.

They even made a Christmas version of those Artful Dodger titles but only chose to use them on the Bigger Breakfast during Christmas 2000. I’ve also read that Johnny was responsible for the ever changing on screen clock during his tenure.

Why did he have input into the clock?

Also, two BB clips have just appeared on YouTube - Keith Chegwin on Sarah Greene and Mike Smith's doorstep, which got Channel 4 into trouble, and a bit of the Friday morning when the show came from France.

I can’t find a source online, but I’m sure it was because he kept having trouble reading it off the live feed monitors in the living room when he needed to make time checks? Hence why it was rendered on a solid background and then got so much bigger towards the end of his tenure.

The quote from the spokesperson in that article is quite something.

We are sorry that Mike Smith's sense of humour seems to have deserted him.

Regarding the show from Calais I've linked to above, it preceded another BB that was entirely an OB the following Monday from Blackpool. I'm guessing those 2 shows were testing the ground for The Bigger Breakfast's tours over the May half term and the summer in 1997. The show hadn't been broadcast in its entirety away from the house until then.

I'm not sure the 2000 titles are quite as incomprehensible to new viewers as some people here are making out. They are very strange, but I'm sure most people would still get the gist of them.

Well, this is the same man who was determined to keep his old shows off TV, even in death...

I suspect most Big Breakfast viewers rarely saw the 7am titles (or end credits) anyway.

The other interesting thing in this clip which was quite a feature in the first year was the complete change of gear for an interview with a man falsly accused of sex crimes. Wonder if they had some sort of current affairs quota initially.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

The Mike ‘n’ Sarah door-knock is completely insane btw, even for 1994. Utterly unthinkable now. Today, even when there is a decent public interest defence- like the camera crews outside Dominic Cummings’ house recently- the door numbers often get blurred so as not to completely identify the property.

Also I’m struck by Gaby’s intro to her serious item, directly after Cheggers. The lack of autocue is really jarring, though it didn’t seem an issue at the time. (Not sure if the show ever had any current affairs quotas as asked above. Those sorts of interviews disappeared when Gaby left, so I assume they were only there to keep her happy. Have to say she was never entirely convincing as a serious interviewer as we saw with her disastrous, now-largely-forgotten chat show).

Liza Tarbuck's credited as a presenter during the white house era here, but I have no recollection of her working on the show pre Johnny Vaughan.

No, I don't recall that either. Was she doing Down your Doorstep as it looks like Richard may have been standing in for Rick, though he's not in that final shot and I don't recall Sharron hosting with him.

Also who is Brigit Grant - I remember a newsreader called Brigit in the Johnny Vaughan era, possible after Phil Gayle left and before Jasmine started. They used to throw to her with the phrase "Take it to the bridge" and I think trialled headlines every 15 minutes with "BBHQ" - Big Breakfast Headlines Quarterly, while she was there.

I remember Big Breakfast Headlines on the Quarter Hour during Phil Gayle's time. He was replaced by Bridgid Nzekwu, who didn't last all that long. I'm presuming Richard Orford's who you see running to the back of the garden, right at the start of the video. There are a few examples of him hosting with Sharron on YouTube. Maybe Liza did Snap, Cackle and Pop when it had presenters.
