Definitely legit. Though the show itself was an Xmas pre rec, with Lisa’s hair longer.

So odd to see Rick hosting with the 97 music.

He didn't get much of a goodbye. On his last day he handed to Vanessa who wished him well and said it had been an absolute pleasure working with him.

I remember he tried to say goodbye towards the end of the show but they cut him off back at the house, where Richard, Denise, Vanessa and the crew were on an open top bus supposedly setting off on the summer Bigger Breakfast tour which started the following Monday.

I didn't think Vanessa features on The Bigger Breakfast.

Back to the Friday Song - on the one hand how awkward would that have been over recent weeks. On the other how uplifting may it have been.

It really depends who was presenting! I always thought it was a mistake to bring back the Friday song in the Richard Bacon/Amanda Bryam era. A step back too far. It was so intrinsically Johnny and Denise/Liza (Kelly Brook always struggled to make it work) that anyone else doing it felt like an imitation and it never really worked.

That's right, but she was on the bus anyway. (Although she did appear on the show during the Bigger Breakfast's run following the death of Princess Diana, the show outside Buckingham Palace. Technically a Big Breakfast news special.)

I was scrolling the former 'the brekkie' website and found some transcripts of the Friday song from November - December 1999.
This one from the 31st December 1999 interests me: https://web.archive.org/web/20001209011100/http://www.thebrekkie.co.uk/archives/f311299.htm
Could this be a fan written one or is it genuine?

I think the “Due to time the next 997 years were skipped” joke is lifted from the show - I.e. They initially pretended they were going to do all 1000 years but stopped after 1000 and “skipped” forward to 1999.

I wish we had more Friday songs transcribed - they were quite a good and fun reminder of the big news at the time!

Thanks for confirming. It was around that time I started to get back in to the show. I was on school holidays and witnessed the Friday song for the first time over Christmas period. I started to record them weekly on tape from following January and recently collecting ones that i've found on YouTube and didn't have in my collection.

Here's one i've found that's not on YouTube. I've uploaded it to my channel. It's dated Friday 17th December 1999 and they're promoting the Christmas shows at the end. The link is unlisted at the moment. I always loved the out of sync cuts to Richard and crew singing on the outside broadcasts.

Do you happen to have this episode? I would love to see it if anyone has.

I did years ago along with the opening of the BBC's "2000 Today". Though it ended up getting mislaid along with a few other VHS's.

The song was performed in the front room with Harry's full band.

Didn't it originally have a different tune when it returned which was swiftly axed for the more familiar version?

When it returned in 2001 they started off with the tune to "Oh I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside" which I have an audio recording of. The following week they did the song to the tune of Camptown Races which can be seen from my upload here:

The following week they returned to the familiar Wakey Wakey Wakey Rise and Shine version.

They were basically trying too hard to try and regain the former glory of that era, which rarely works.

That is truly terrible. I see the show is still sporting the relaunch graphics here but is otherwise harking back to its 1997 (second) heyday.

I really wish they’d stuck with the relaunch a bit longer. Arguably what killed it was the fact they undid it so quickly - once they started reverting it looked like a poor copycat whereas the 2001 revamp actually had a lot of promise. Sure the set was too dark and they should have scrapped Donna Air so they could just launch with Amanda Byram and Paul Tonkinson; but the fast paced, newsy, shorter items worked really well, the graphics looked fresh and it was still offering something completely different to the BBC and GMTV. They just panicked when it wasn’t an instant hit.

Absolutely agree - unlike 1996 the 2001 relaunch really was a modern refresh of the format and a return to the idea of the early days if no feature lasting more than 5 minutes. Yes, it had it's faults but Paul deserved longer than the 6 weeks or so he was there.
