Since 1990, BBC1 and BBC2 have released many new idents. Which are your favourites?

I think the Christmas idents left a legacy as well with BBC One idents. Because of the Christmas idents in exclusive use, the news of the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 was introduced by kids on Christmas pudding Space hoppers. I know it was a few years until newssafe Christmas idents became the norm, but was this why they were started?

Yes.

Even some of the initial news-safe ones were simply edited or slowed-down versions of the usual Christmas ones, some using the same music as well, which could be considered too "upbeat" to introduce the news. I think the first time they got the tone absolutely right was the news-safe version of the 2009 Doctor Who ident. Just a simple logo form-up against a winter sky with a sombre version of the main ident's music. It was lovely.

I agree with all of this. Ballet did maybe have one shortcoming: only one camera angle.

That was common to the whole set of idents wasn't it?

Idents which cut (after the initial form up) are a pain for the Director as they have to make sure they don't cut too close to the start of the programme, which would look weird.
