I have always believed that the second episode of EastEnders on Christmas Day 1986 got the highest ever ratings for a non sporting/news event, about 30 million. That episode featured Arthur's nervous breakdown, Den issuing Angie with divorce papers and Pauline finding out that Den was Vicky's father.
