It's always hard to pick, but the music with this was so damn fantastic.
After that I'd go for the Carlton hearts 99-02 and then BBC Two's ident bonanza already mentioned.

Well replace BBC Choice with the original versions then I'd agree. The channel name written in the middle of the screen was much better than the boxes we have today

Also, I think the whole range of the 1997-2002 style BBC idents were one of the best!

Erm... Yorkshire, anyone? My personal chevron favourite was the 1987 Liquid Gold one. Ah, happy days.

I liked the 1997 idents aswell as the cake. It might have been in that font but they were good and some of the edits were great.
Like the tower one and the generic one.

How could we possibly have got this far without anyone mentioning Central? Their idents were so grand and adaptable and could be used on any occasion:

The 1991 - 97 2s with the old
BBC
writing are by far the best IMO.
But the most fantastic idents on at the moment I think are the new Channel 4 ones. Objects when seen at a particular angle form the infamous "4" logo, but only for 1 second. I would bow to the people who made them.

I personally think that all presentation was good around the late 1990s and up to and including 2000, particularly BBCs One and Two with the balloon and the 2. But Channel 4, ITV and Channel 5 (as they were then known!) also had good presentation, as did Sky and UK Gold. But my fave is the uniformed BBC/UKTV look around that time. It was a very simple, generic presentational style, yet at the same time each channel had their own unique, personal quality (globe-balloon, 2, hearts, fireworks, etc).

After killing off Central's identity, the symbolism of Carlton blowing up a "cake" might have just upset a few too many people.

The funny thing is that my mum met one of the guys working on the idents while she was a temp at Carlton in Birmingham using one of these expensive tablet thingys.
