Channel 4 should be top but sadly C4 is shown at a bad time and most average people will not sit through 1 hour of news.
Hey look! A sensible comment from Chesh! : ))
I jest.
Channel 4 News is a vastly underrated programme - shame it never seems to do any better than it does really.

Most newsrooms (print & broadcast media) in the country
& throughout the world
have Sky News on in their offices. I've never come across one that doesn't have Sky News -the prescense of News 24 in offices is a different matter though.
Look how many times grabs off Sky News have been used in print, even when the BBC had the same pics. That's because the newspaper offices & their picture desks have it on. And, the powerful Sky News logo stands out clearly in print. Even if a News 24 grab was used, the logo wouldn't stand out. Earlier in the year, the Telegraph used a 6 col grab off Sky News on its front page, you can't buy that sort of publicity. The Sky News logo (& website address) itself filled about 1.5 legs.

Er, the ones I've worked in don't and didn't -- had it available, but since the advent of News 24 they've switched.
I know of a few that use it, but both ITN and News 24 are having more impact than you acknowledge here.
Granted, though - Sky News certainly does get used more in papers
Well I've been to Granada, BBC NW, ITN, CNN, Most of the broadsheets offices and Sky.
Every one of them had it on a large screen where it could be seen around the newsroom.
News 24 is not having much of an impact at all from what I have seen, I only saw it on a smaller screen in ITN and the same sized screen (obviously) at the BBC.
ITN is on in the ITN newsroom but the most amusing thing is behind the ITN NC presenter there is a monitor with Sky News on it!
There is also Sky News on those screens in the Westminster offices.
I've never seen News 24 near a Sky News screen.
CNBC have monitors as part of their studio, large ones behind a pane of glass.
There are 3 monitors on either side of the presenters stacked on top of each other. The top two have CNBC on and the middle on has Sky News on it.
CNN has it all over the newsroom, like a bloody rash and on those screens at the top.
CNN does not have News 24 on they have World, as do CNBC.

I felt C4 News' coverage of the Genoa Summit was excellent on Saturday. It's advantage is that is doesn't have to churn out its news 24 hours & can have ALL its reporters focussed on one programme a night - the only news programme like it on British television. (Newsnight is a totally different sort of programme)
It alson only has to prepare one bulletin a day so can focus all of its efforts on that.
I wish they would bring back the Channel 4 News Summary though.
Peter Sissons used to present on 4, as did Trev. and Nick Owen and loads more.

OK - here we go again.

They are NOT supposed to feature what is called 'Appointment to view' programming, which News 24 seems to continually show whilst marketing it as a 24 hour *rolling* news service. It is clearly not.
It clearly is a perfect example of a rolling news service. News 24 rolls the news over every half an hour - the news is rolling and when something new happens it is added to the rolling bullitens. It isn't meant to be the breaking news all of the time - News 24 is the news when you want it - not the latest news story all of the time over the next hour until you're bored of it. It is so that people who want to know what's going on in the world can tune in at 00 and 30 to get headlines or 27 and 57 to get weather etc. It is giving people the news at times when they know they can get it - not just one story over and over again. It is people who want a BBC News bulliten when they get home for work and not have to wait until 1/6/10. That is what News 24 promote themselves as. And IMO they do it rather well.

With regards to the presenters. News is a depressing thing in itself, as one other pointed out the BBC does present coverage in a 'Watch and Cry' way, a very good description I think.
Sky managed to break down the depression with a bit of banter along the way. It makes watching the channel more enjoyable and keeps people interested.
News 24 is meant as a rolling BBC News bulliten. BBC are world renound for their factual and sensible news reporting. They do banter but it can break down the atmosphere if your presenters start chatting about the autocue going down in the middle of a bulliten. It's a bit like the Weakest Link having Anne Robinson saying 'You are the weakest link - good bye! But thanks for coming on the show and you did really well!' It wouldn't work!

Now - there's surprising. The fact that News 24 is not available any where except the UK would mean they would have to show world! And what's World - news 24 for the world. There are differences but from my experience on World and News 24 they are just the same with differences in stories and minor differences in presentation.

Why not? If that's what the broadcaster either does well or wants to do and that is what it feels will draw viewers then why not. If I want to see the news I will go to News 24 - I know they will give me a full round up of what's going on - everything from that day. If I turn to Sky i know that more than likely they will be chatting - sorry 'bantering' - or doing some particular story to death rather than give me a nice simple bulliten.
Shows why journalists watch Sky as I said before - they want all the details for the story so they watch that. News 24 tell ordinary people what they want to know and leave it to them to look on the excellent website if they want to know more.

See you all soon for another part in the News 24/Sky saga - how interesting no-one's discussing ITN

BBC News 24 is the BBC's continuous television news channel, broadcasting from studios at Television Centre in West London.
Launched in November 1997, it provides television news from the BBC when you want it, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Every hour on the hour we give you a full bulletin of all the day's news. Headlines are updated every fifteen minutes, so you need never miss out on the latest developments.
Regular bulletins
In the hot seat
There are sport headlines at 15 minutes past every hour, with a full sports bulletin at 35 minutes past.
At 25 past each hour we bring you the business headlines and latest from the markets, followed by all the business news at 45 minutes past.
And at 27 and 57 minutes past the hour there's a full weather forecast.
Although I am a big beeb fan, I still think Sky News is a first class news service. I have noticed that they often break stories first, and often have exclusives (like the footage of the man who was shot in Genoa last night). I also like what they do up to the hour and quite like the ident. However, I don't like the studio and most of the presenters to me are quite boring. I also find it hard to watch for long. For this I voted news 24

Am I the only one that is sick of this SAME ARGUMENT!? You just say the same thing over and over again, your just going around in circles. It doesn't seem that anyone's mind is going to be changed as to whether they like Sky News or News 24 better. Just watch what you want! These Sky News v News 24 posts come up every few weeks or so, and it's always the same thing. Get over it!

Yes but I don't thing 'kingrikk' has been around long enough to have experienced one of these arguements!
You say that there is nothing wrong with News 24 doing what they do if it draws viewers. Well let me tell you something, it doesn't draw viewers... take a look at the ratings.
A news channel just should not be constant bulletins, I see no problem with the presenters breaking down what would otherwise be a depressing programme with a bit of a chat.
Remind yourself not to put 'GSOH' in your next 'Personal' ad, please.
In case you didn't know, CNN and CNBC are broadcast from London and obviously do get BBC News 24, yet they have BBC World instead.
To prove a point:
(FROM THE PRESS ASSOCIATION TODAY)
We are receiving reports that a person has fallen overboard from the QE2.
The ship is currently 95 miles off the south west coast of Ireland.
A search involving a Nimrod from RAF Kinloss and an Irish aircraft is underway.
Marshall Kinnear, from RAF Kinloss, has told Sky News the missing person may have been a chef on board the QE2.
The ship is on its way to Southampton.
We will bring you more information as we get it.
*********
We are receiving reports that around 40 people are trapped upside down on a white knuckle ride following an incident at a theme park.
The Rameses' Revenge ride at Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey is thought to have malfunctioned, according to Sky News.
We will bring you more details as we get them.

These are the two news reports the PA issued today and both quoted Sky News as a reliable and accurate source of information to provide to their users, of which I am one.
I agree the BBC is very accurate, yet probably one of the most respected organisations in the world, the PA, doesn't quote them regularly at all.
No-one is talking about ITN because they are not a rival service to either Sky News or BBC News 24. I would actually argue that News 24 isn't a rival to Sky News as it seems to adopt a totally different agenda to almost every other news channel in the world.
What on Earth that quote from the BBC is supposed to prove to me I do not know.
The BBC have talked up News 24 since launch, saying it was going to present a more world affairs approach to the news.
Yet about one month ago I read that a student had done a case study on both channels and found that Sky covers and average of 14 mins of world news per hour, compared to 7 mins for News 24.
Even the BBC don't know what they want.

Bah. Both BBC and ITN are going to get *many* more viewers than $ky News in the UK for way, way into the future. Get used to it, chesh, Sky is a bit-player.
The only people who watch Sky News are those who think it's a *good idea* to have 500 channels of tat, and a bad idea to have 5 quality channels. The only worthwhile addition Sky makes to TV is the Discovery channels, and a lot of what they show is joint-financed by the BBC...
