I would have to go for the BBC1 COW globe, which I loved right from the first time I saw it on its debut outing in 1985. The Doctor Who Ghost Light DVD which I got for Christmas contains some continuity announcements with this globe and being able to see it in high quality for the first time in nearly 14 years reminded me of how simple and yet stunningly effective it is.
It is difficult to comprehend that it is very nearly 20 years since it was introduced, and computer graphics have come so far yet it still doesn't look the tiniest bit dated. This is what an ident should be, not a load of people prancing around the screen!
Yes, I'm tempted to say COW globe, although I wasn't too impressed with it in use on BBC One. However, the COW globe on BBC Videos never fails to fascinate me, ever since I was a kid. I think it's very ingenious how it starts off as an atlas then folds into the globe. And at the end of the Videos, the complete opposite right down to the music. Talking of which, does anyone know where I can find media files (both sequences) of COW globe on the web, as seen on BBC Videos?
But my nomination for best TV ident goes to the BBC One balloon. I think I've already justified this in my previous posts!

What do we people think is the all time best ident for a TV station that we've seen?

Why was this guy banned, by the looks of that post he was a tw*t also why was he allowed a large image like that when my much smaller Kryten got removed.

I think the new 4 idents are quite good personally.
BBC 2 definately best networked idents but Thames wins hands down for regional idents

A difficult decision, but the final set of Central cake idents remain technically and visually excellent.
I have always wondered how the cake idents would have developed if Carlton (and later itv) hadn't imposed their corporate presentation, especialy as Central's designers managed to create such stunning idents with much less capable hardware and software than is currently available:

Also, look at the Central News (west) titles from the same period:

And the ending:

Many thanks to tv-ark.
Incidentally, does anyone have a full-length version of the above Central News theme?

The Grampian computer generated ident from the mid eighties is just great.

I preferred this Grampian one to the above 1:

That ident was probably one of the most unoriginal ideas ever - didn't it use the 1989 ITV music... even 10 years after if first started...
I quite liked the 2000 STV/Grampian idents, especially the 30 sec duration idents (box animated on in the last 5 seconds). I've only ever seen one example of those idents, they probably weren't used much.

Yeah, I only ever seen 1 once. Probably just something to fill time in.

BBC 2 1991 - 2001 - I don't know exactly how many different idents came and went, but there were so many- I was very fond of them.
...and to think they lasted a decade - they were obviously doing something right.
Shame that the BBC TWO we see now has idents that, while still better than other channels', adhere to a consistent scheme of yellow background and white '2'.
