Anyone else remember/like the Crystal Maze studio? That was the best I've seen outside a news arena.

So those photos would be from the Laurie Dhue fan club, then... Wink

I really like Laurie. I saw her for the first time a couple of years ago on CNN, presenting CNN Saturday. Since then, I believe she's been on MSNBC (where she presented NewsFront) before moving to Fox News. Blimey - she gets around a bit, doesn't she!

In a vague attempt to drag this thread back on-topic, is that view of the Fox News set (above) the soft area, or is that the whole set?! I've seen it quite a bit on the Fox News coverage over the past few days.

Sorry, but I don't like the CNN or MSNBC studios.  They try to be too showbiz, too glitzy, too superficial, not very 'newsy'.

I think CNN is 'newsy' - certainly more newsy than what we have over here.
I don't think news programmes should have dull studios. If you're going to be broadcasting from there 24 hours a day then you've got to make it a friendly environment, not one that's going to get boring after 10 mins.

Mark, AFAIK that is the only area of the Fox studios.

The thing you have to remember about US networks (CNN especially) is that they have lots of different studios.
CNN has its main studio in Atlanta - that's where the big studio in the pictures is. But the Atlanta studio is only used during the day time. At night they go to Washington, New York and LA. In comparison, our networks only have to create one decent looking studio.

Fox's daytime studio is what you see there -- it doesn't look 'newsy' at all, but I don't think it's ugly though…

They have various other studios there in the News Corp building -- they have another one for their breakfast show 'Fox and Friends' and then one for the O'Reilly Factor, and the Fox News Edge -- they're all right next to eachother, I think……

What they do for the Fox Report (main evening news programme) and Hannity and Colmes (poltical debate nightly programme) is that they bring in different…platforms…that the desks go on, and they change some of the background images and lighting -- it's hard to explain, but they do make good use out of that tiny studio……

And the pics are from the Laurie Dhue fan club…she's pretty good, I first saw her on CNN co-hosting the 'World Today' and stuff, then on 'Newsfront' and later 'Special Edition' on MSNBC -- and now she's on Fox…I think four or five of Fox's anchors were once on MSNBC, that's a little weird…

If any cares, I'll be getting my TV card later this year (their not compatible with Mac OS X as of yet, they will be in the fourth quarter of this year, or so I hear)  -- I have a bunch of tapes and stuff to upload eventually……

Sorry I strayed from the topic……my favourite studio in the UK is  the News 24 studio  -- but I also like the new World studio and the ITN News Channel studio…
In America, I like MSNBC's -- CNN's is okay, I think it's a little dull and I don't like the colours, but it's nice -- I actually like Fox's too, it looks very clean and 'fresh' - if a studio can look like that!  Whatev…

Yeah, it was actually done in an old aircraft hanger!

From what I've seen of MSNBC's studio this weekend, it looks excellent. That huge blue map background is actually really good - very modern and colourful. It's a shame the desk is raised up on a platform, though - I think it would look much better if it was on ground level so you could see a bit more of the people working at desks in the background.

I also saw Chris Janseng and (I think) Greg Jarret presenting together this afternoon from 11am-3pm today (6am-10am US). That looked really good, as you could see lots of the newsroom and, on one of the angles, you could see the big round desk in the background.

I've got a couple of big photos of the MSNBC newsroom, but they're on another computer at the mo. I'll transfer them tomorrow and post them here.

As for coverage, CNN seems a bit more high-brow than MSNBC - more political discussion etc. I guess the difference between CNN and MSNBC is roughly equivalent to the difference between BBC News and ITV News (except MSNBC is quite a bit better than ITV!).

to me the US studios look 'unorthodox' - but i think its due to what we've known - ie predominantly sensible studios, eg bbc(blue), itv(blue) and ch4(dark blue and orange) news in the mid 1990s.  i dont think the american sets are ugly - just a difference in tastes.

i just thought id mention the abc studio - as nobody else has
i do think that ABC world news tonight studio is quite nice - not sure wat station its on in the US, (is there an abcnews channel?) -but i see it on bbc news24 (on bbc one). - i think it is simple and authoritative in its design

ABC doesn't have a news channel, though they have toyed with the idea every now and again. The only time you see the ABC News/World News Tonight studio is on World News Tonight, World News Now (nighttime two hour live news service), or ABC News Special Reports. They've obviously used it a lot through this last tragedy. It is a very nice, clean, newsy studio. I personally don't like the background with the globe and nighttime sky thing. The entire studio is two floors actually and the news desk is rather larger and circular I think. ABC's graphics are very nice too…they're the only network that didn't create special graphics for the terrorist attacks though…

CBS' studio is nice too…not as good as the others though. I think CBS' is a lot like ABC's, but you don't get to see a lot of it. CBS' graphics are good too…

Yeah, America's whole approach to news is different than Britain's as almost any news junkie knows. The studios are just a, personification I guess, of that. What's nice about the US news studios is that they really aren't bound to only being able to look one way -- They are very adaptable.

Oh, and MSNBC's huge blue map is very cool -- it's actually kind of animated -- there are different lights behind it that light up and slowly gently pulse……up until a few years ago, the map was more black with country's outlined in blue lines -- more blue lines would form like across major airline routes (New York to London, London to Berlin - Washington to Paris -- things like that) -- it was pretty cool…don't know why they changed it.

Here are some shots of the MSNBC studio/newsroom. They're a few years old, but I don't think much has changed.

Well BBC News 24, I suppose have a 'proper' studio compared to BBC World, who have dumped their set in the newsroom, but World is interesting. but BBC National News is the best by far.

It'll be interesting to see Skys, ITN's OK, well the desk is!

C4 News gets my vote.

Quite adaptable. Feels airy. Hints at a busy newsroom, without it being distracting. Hints at the 4 without it being too blatant.

A standing up area, a sitting down area, somewhere separate for the second presenter.

Big screen for big news.

The C4 News studio is very good, expecially with that view of the ITN budiling in the background.

The thought that ABC has never launched a news channel is not quite true.
Back in 1982 ABC launched the Satellite News Channel, SNC for short, to rival CNN. Needless to say SNC was a disaster and ABC couldn't find the funds to keep it going. CNN would've been history by now if it hadn't been run by Turner, the same can be said for Sky/BSkyB.
