For me the best were:

Sky 1989-1993 : Not the first versions, but the 3D-tilted versions (same logos, same music, but different form-up). They just looked so different to any other channels at the time, had great music too.
Channel 4 1982-1996: Has to go in here, but only the original versions with Fourscore, not after they dropped it. (Technically this should probably be considered a 1980s ident though).
ITV 1989-1998 (well, for Grampian anyway...everyone else c.1991). Another great theme, we in UTV-land didn't get to see it though.
RTE 1995-1997: The first real RTÉ corporate look since the short lived 1986 25th anniversary look. Made everything they had done before pale into comparsion. Pity the clock gave new meaning to the words "Time flies"...
Network 2 1987-1995. Used for far too long, but in its day a classic.
BBC One 1997-2001 Don't need to say any more...

For anyone fortunate enough not to live in the Tyne Tees area at the time here is the horrific C3NE ident (click on the image for the video if you dare...)

However i think most people were p*ssed off because Yorkshire said they would also rebrand Yorkshire 'C3 Yorkshire' but then chickened out and gave the poor old Tyne Tees brand the boot. Then GMG made arguably their best decision ever when they took over Yorkshire's assets, they rebranded the network Tyne Tees TV.

What's even more confusing about the ident is that it reads:
North East 3
Tyne Tees Television

Yes and the announcers used to often say: 'This is Tyne Tees Television, broadcasting in the North East on Channel 3'
It was as if Yorkshire couldn't make up there minds about the C3 brand, so why did they bother spending a ridiculous amount of money creating it anyway?

Having virtually reduced Tyne Tees to a shadow of its former self, Yorkshire would have ditched the name altogether given the chance. Fortunately the terms of TTTV's licence prevented this, and the "Tyne Tees Television" branding appeared on-screen along with the Channel 3 one.

This was a lesson in how not to rebrand a TV station!

I think the late Bruce Gyngell had something to do with it, when he was in charge at Yorkshire he was also responsible for taking off (the rather crappy) Hollywood Wives programme from about ten years ago, whilst the rest of the Network was showed it.

As you say Yorkshire should have been Channel 3 Yorkshire, but they kept Yorkshire Television strong and the 3 symbol did appear on idents and endcaps until Granada phased it out.

Channel 3 could have worked well IMO, it was just implemented so badly.

Anyway in no particular order

Granada (1991-1999 idents)
BBC One Balloon (1997-2002)
Channel 4 (1982-1996)
Sky TV (1996-1997)
LWT (1997-1999)
Central (Cake)
Carlton (1999-2002)
Scottish (1996-2000)
G4
G4
The short-lived 1998 Channel 4 celebrity idents with the personalities posing, then disappearing into stained glass blocks with the C4 circle logo at the end.

They had an extremely short life, but were actually good celeb idents that worked, unlike ITV's...
