They use the 'sung' version when the main Olympics 2008 programme (usually at 2am & 9am) and Olympic Breakfast are introduced.
They use the instrumental version in the Games Today programme and the shorter instrumental versionafter the midday news - so they can cut back to the live action quicker.

Talking about the theme tune, have they phased out the sung version, everytime I've seen the opening titles recently they've used the instrumental version only

I must say as with the promo the titles and theme have grown on me over the last couple of weeks.
What the BBC's coverage has proved more than anything though is how wrong they were too axe Grandstand. The Olympics is multi-sport programming at it's best and although Grandstand may not be able to offer the calibre of sports week in, week out, I think just as with the Olympics even though content may be playing out on the interactive service, you still need a host and programme on the flagship channel just to tie it all together.

And I have to say that Jake Humphrey has won me over and proved himself. I think the BBC's coverage has been great, not seen any of the early morning shows only mid morning and afternoon.
I'm not sure that there were enough sports that the BBC had to justify all of the hours that Grandstand used to take up on a Saturday. I could be wrong though.

The trouble is he should have proved himself before being given what you'd expect to generally be the most watched slot of the coverage, not the other way round. I still think there are far better presenters within BBC Sport who should have been given the slot over him - if anything bringing out Manish Bhasin and having Jake just cover on Football Focus would have made more sense.
Is Huw Edwards returning to commentate on the closing ceremony?

I'd agree with that and would have preferred John Inverdale doing the studio stuff, but Jake hasn't really fluffed and was quite competent. And when I saw Huw Edwards doing the 10 O'Clock News from Beijing I assumed that he is back for the closing ceremony. I would ask why him though? This is something that would have been done better by Barry Davies.

I can only guess John Inverdale really must prefer being sidelined to the radio - if he wanted the slot, I see no reason why he wouldn't get it now Steve Rider is gone.
Not sure what's up with Adrian Chiles today hanging around after 9am, but it's a shame he hasn't done so before because he's been outstanding this morning and it's a shame the BBC haven't used him for more than just Olympic Breakfast.
And how on earth has Synchronised Swimming never been ditched from the games - doesn't look like the BBC could even be bothered to cover it - they're taking the Canadian commentary.

The Games Today is the most watched slot - not the daytime stuff - and has been peaking above 7 million at times.
Clare Balding is excellent though isn't she? She's just done NINE hours of excellent coverage. A really natural, relaxed broadcaster who knows her stuff but remembers we're not all experts!

Yep - believe so - he's back out there for BBC News.

Looks like they've forgot to put the "live action coming up soon" caption on most of the EBU feeds, which usually comes up when nothing's happening.

EDIT: A random person has now cropped up on the 5th feed, looks like he's rehearsing for something!
