I'm not sure actually, Jugalug. I think it is people like you who swipe at people merely passing comment that is the downfall of the Olympics and at times this forum.

Their morning show Sunrise is also being presented a few cubicles down from the BBC.

Hmm - not sure that is strictly true.

The main BBC Studio is in the Ling Long pagoda, and shares a level with France Television I believe. Don't think the Aussies are on the same floor?

It could be that the Aussie gallery, which will be in the IBC, is a few doors down from the BBC IBC operation, but the BBC aren't presenting from the IBC.

Or was the discussion about location/news rather than sport/studio presentation?
There was a behind-the-scenes tour thing, they're probably at different locations. Sunrise are/were broadcasting from a big balcony thing with dividing walls to seperate broadcasters away from the main pagoda area.

Ah - suspect that is the position BBC News are using for exterior presentation rather than the main BBC Sport studio.

Interesting: NBC in the USA have been caught shuffling around the countries in the opening parade.

Hardly a surprise. NBC is showing almost nothing live - unlike CBC in Canada... The Opening Ceremony was not shown live on either the East or West Coasts in the US - and was delayed and heavily edited.

They edited out or voiced over some key elements - including the oaths - and massively tightened up the arrival of the Olympic Flame. AIUI they removed at least an hour from the 4 hour ceremony. They also added a lot of their own cameras to the host broadcast coverage - which some are arguing spoiled the coverage in the US.

You could argue that by delaying they were able to insert ad breaks sensitively I guess...

Seven had an interesting time with that over here - they seemed to be plonked in whenever something interesting started to happen, and there were quite a few as well.

They also had audio difficulties for the first 15 minutes, which is apparently something that also happened to CBC.

Hazel Irvine is having to sit in the studio with a bucket next to her - apparently the inclement weather has caused a leak in the studio - that's not going to be good with all the electrics around!

It'll be like Manchester 2002 allover again when the highlights studio got flooded and then never reappeared

That link from BBC1 to BBC2 was quite messy with Hazel talking to both channels at once, rather than how they do it at Wimbledon

As I said previously in this thread, this was the case with Sydney 2000 as well.
It would appear the only chance you get to watch the Olympics live when you live in America is when it's held in the US as was the case in Atlanta in 1996.

But I'm not really surprised that the opening ceremony was edited by NBC. Considering the way the broadcasters and the media behave over there, it's surprising a lot of Americans are aware there's actually a world outside their shores.

It will be a sad day and a sad state of affairs if our broadcasters start behaving like this.

Even when the games are in the US it isn't unusual for West Coast viewers to still get delayed coverage. Apparently at Salt Lake City, viewers in Salt Lake City weren't able to see a lot events live...

This time NBC are showing some events live on the East Coast (where they've negotiated US-friendly event schedules in Beijing - like morning finals for swimming and gymnastics) - they are still delaying some of them for the West Coast. I believe Basketball is a sore point - particularly as the non-NBC news channels will happily tell you the results before you see the coverage.

Yep - though a lot of lighting and heavy electrics used for these kind of de-rig studios is OB grade - and designed to cope with wet football fields. Still not great though.

AIUI the Ling Long pagoda is not built to the highest building standards (the window glass is apparently very poor quality - rippled and not amazingly well glazed)

Yep - I hear there were problems with the IBC feeds of the opening ceremony. I guess the BBC had their own circuits - as apart from the problems on day one with no 5.1 sound on BBC HD - they were fine.

It's ridiculous that NBC won't even give their own viewers the chance to watch the Opening Ceremony live at an unsociable hour. Having pre-recorded it though I don't blame them for cropping an hour off the running time, presumably most of which came from the 2 hour athletes procession. That is an issue which needs addressing.

Thankfully Athletics have told them where to stuff it, but it's ridiculous the swimming schedule has been turned upside down for the benefit of NBC. The IOC try and justify it due to the cost involved, but NBC know when they bid for the games they're not often going to be in America, so if NBC are willing to pay, they should accept the consequences.

After all, viewers in Europe, Asia and Africa are now suffering due to the decisions made to benefit the Americans, meaning the swimming finals - arguably the flagship events of week one, are at unsociable hours rather than in primetime for the local audience and mid-afternoon for us.
