Personally I don't think London should be influenced by the Beijing ceremony - we should stage a ceremony that works for us as Brits. We can't spend that kind of money - nor should we.

Why worry about money now? We've wasted a fortune, which could have been put to better use, bringing the games here in the first place so why not just be reckless and blow the lot.

These days the IOC would come down on you like a tonne of bricks for doing that. The Olympic rings graphic is VERY tightly controlled and the rules for its usage are very strict.

NZ's Official Olympic rings are like this...

Not sure if any other countries around the world have silly additions.

TV One have used the rings in promos since easter and examples of it...

I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem with the BBC animating the Olympic rings and then bringing in the BBC One logo - it's just obscuring it which I think they have an issue with.

OLD BOXES! The old BBC ONE and BBC TWO boxes were used on the multiplatform trailer just then.

That was the least of the programme's problems, does it really matter ?
More significantly they chopped the 4 hour spectacular opening down to less than 30 minutes, then padded the remainder of the show out with pointless chit-chat, and even some footage shot on a mobile phone. Terrific showcase for the HD simulcast eh ?

Yes, I thought it was quite a poor start for "Games Today". Some of the most impressive aspects of the opening ceremony were missed out at the expense of Colin Jackson's views on the Italians' shoes. Everything apart from the ceremony highlights felt like padding.

They really should have done a proper preview show before the event (as they've done in the past) for all the chit chat stuff, leaving today's show to then concentrate solely on the Opening Ceremony.

And I know it's looped on BBCi, but it wouldn't have been a bad idea to repeat The Games Today either after Newsnight on BBC2 or late on BBC1 to capture the later audience and fill the gap a bit before the live action starts around 2am.

Believe me - there would.

The animation of the Olympic rings is also very tightly controlled. The rings exist as a logo-form as a single entity. There are very limited forms of animation allowed. Most animations that break-up the rings into separate elements, or selectively reveal elements of the logo are prohibited. The rights holders work very hard with the IOC to stay within the rules.

It is even more tightly controlled in the UK - as there is an act of parliament now in effect to control the brand identity in readiness for 2012 AIUI.

I thought that the video diary was one of the more interesting bits of the show. The 14yo diver is going to be all over the games coverage - and it was an interesting insight into the fact that he is still a young teenager.

However much they'd cut down the 4 hours they'd have had complaints - the 30 minute ceremony, 30 minute look-ahead split seemed about right to me. I was as interested in the stuff about who to look out for as I was the ceremony itself - though I had seen the whole 4 hours already.

Real pity they can't get the 5.1 audio right yet - they've apologised twice on BBC HD for the lack of it. (Eurosport HD have it - but their telephone-grade commentary means it is largely immaterial)

Only real complaint I have about what they cut out of the highlights was the lighting of the torch - they only showed the final runner which kind of missed out a key part of the ceremony. They should at least have shown it arriving in the stadium too.

The Games Today gets a regular 7pm slot every night even moving EastEnders later except Saturdays when it is shunted much earlier in the evening to make way for Last Choir Standing Rolling Eyes
