Looking quite good on Eurosport HD at the moment. Don't know why BBC HD aren't showing anything until the Opening Ceremony.

How much of the games is actually being produced in HD - I highly doubt it's everything, and it's also possible not everything will be in 16:9. IIRC some of the more niche events at the Commonwealth Games a couple of years ago were broadcast in 4:3.

"Six of the best" sporting title sequences from Media Guardian (i.e. the first six they found on YouTube)

Be interesting to see what they come up for Beijing, and whether they'll resemble the promos in anyway (I hope not, well not too much anyway).

Olympic wise - Sydney was arguably the best, but I don't think any fitted the programme more than "Barcelona" did in 1992.

I guess we should all get penning a song called "London" then, though my gut feeling is they'll go back to Chariots of Fire.

This'll be the first games where 100% of events are produced in HD.

From what I've heard the titles will be a cut-down version of the promo, I guess we'll find out on Friday.

These are gross, you'd think they would go to a bit more effort with HD and all... oh well, hopefully we won't be subject to these come Friday!

Err - those ARE the graphics that will be used across all events at the Olympics.
They are the same as those used in Sydney and Athens. Even the replay wipe is the same with the 5 rings moving left to right with a white flare in the ring surrounds. Hoping for more animation and maybe even a beveled effect, but hey-ho, there's always London 2012, eh?

The font used for the Torino graphics were different. They were much fatter and bigger and filled the caption box to the top and bottom limit.. These summer game captions are far nicer to read and look at.

Athens 2004 Broadcasters Handbook posted:
The graphics package for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games is a continuation of the work begun when the 'Graphics for the new Millenium' debuted at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Following criteria set by the IOC, development, growth and adaptation of the look and corresponding layouts continued during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Further development and adaptation was undertaken for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games.

(snip)

The graphics contain the standard Olympic palette of colours and defined elements seen in previous Games, supplemented with colours and pictograms that link the past for a unique effect that is rich in history. A minimum of explanatory text, movement and animation are incorporated in the look in an effort to present the sport cleanly concisely and without undue distraction.

I would imagine there is a similar passage in this years handbook.

These graphics are not quite the same as Athens, which were "boxy", these have gained the diagonals and curves used in Torino for the first time. (cough cough Wink).

Interesting how far things have come in 4 years. Athens was the first games with 100% 16:9 coverage, with literally a hand full of HD cameras.

Surprised Has it? Has it?

Why has nobody mentioned this?

For a forum supposed to be dedicated to television, this is a disgrace. Such a big event has gone by without mention.

Are you always a jerk?

Theyre not the same as Athens... slightly different but not the same.. Athens were much nicer.. I think these are appalling tbh.

Is this thread the right place to post Olympic branding by TV Channels too? Well here are some videos and caps of TV One's Olympic branding here in NZ. The Idents look amazing in HD!

All host broadcast coverage - whoever is producing it - will be fully 1080/50i HD in 16:9. This is the first Olympic games to make that commitment. It is possible that the odd microcam in the coverage will be an SD upconvert, but there won't be many SD sources AIUI.

Athens had totally separate HD and SD coverage, with only some events dual covered in HD. Torino had unified coverage - where events covered in HD were downconverted to SD (rather than separately covered in HD and SD), but other events were SD only (and a couple 4:3 SD at that).

As for the World Cup and European Cup the BBC are HD on-site - and have an HD studio AIUI. The only HD outlet for BBC stuff will be BBC HD, with BBC One, BBC Two and BBCi still SD.

All host broadcasters providing games coverage have to be using 16:9 1080/50i production facilities. Many of these are hired in as the facilities that the host broadcasters own may well be SD.

As in previous years many events are not being host broadcast by the Chinese (just as the Greek's didn't do everything in Athens) - many events are being host broadcast by broadcasters who have production teams who specialise in specific events.

From memory :

The BBC are covering the rowing and the flat water kayaking etc. (A legacy of the boat race expertise)

Channel Seven from Australia are again providing all the main swimming and diving coverage (apart from the 10km outside stuff)

YLE from Finland and SVT from Sweden are covering the main Athletics events, and the opening and closing ceremonies (YLE)

NHK from Japan (who invented HDTV) are covering the gymnastics.

KBS from Korea are doing Archery.

ERT from Greece are doing the weightlifing.

The list goes on - Cuba is doing the baseball, Czech and Slovak TV are sharing the handball or hockey (can't remember), Hungarian TV doing the fencing, Slovenian TV doing the white water stuff, Belgian TV is doing most of the cycling. CBC are also doing quite a lot - but I can't remember what!

The one major Olympic broadcaster who does NO host broadcast coverage is NBC of the US. They, instead, take over a very large chunk of the IBC, and have facilities in most areas of US interest, purely for unilateral coverage for the US only...

(I hear they even have a branch of Starbucks INSIDE their production centre at the IBC...)
