Does nayone know any more information about the redevelopment of Broadcasting House, to be completed in 2008, which will be the new home of BBC NEWS, RADIO, BBC WORLD and BBC WORLD SERVICE? I read it's going to be the biggest news centre in the world with a newsroom hald the size of a football pitch? I'd love to see any artistic impressions on how it might look... I have found one of inside here:

Does anyone have info about this? I'm rather interested because will this affect the way the news programs are presented? Obviously by 2008, they'll be some change in presentaion but the who look of channels like BBC World, that are all studio-based will change and I find it quite strange that just a few years after moving into 'a state-of-the-art digital newsroom' at Television Centre, they're moving on to higher climbs. I know the BBC is the worldfs largest news gathering organisation, but this bumps up their prestigue and must place them as the worlds biggest news organisation... with a newsroom bigger than the Sky News Centre, CNN's headquarters in Atlanta... I can't wait to see it.

Any info appreciated.

My first thought when i heard about the "half the size of a football pitch" thing was that it didn't sound that big. Obviously, they'll have to have a bit of a shift around of newsroom sets - possibly this is when the current BBC News theme will be dropped/replaced or remixed again!?

Sounds like they've run into trouble with it though - also read that the foundations will run 3 metres from an Underground line!

I reckon that look will date quite quickly, it looks very "of the time" as the 60s towerblocks did - and we all know what happened to them! However, I reckon we'll go back to a newsroom setting for news bulletins in 2008 like in the late 80s/early 90s - I know technically they have one now but it is still a studio. I reckon the desks will be on a little platform in the centre of the newsroom and then when they get bored of that (2012?) they'll put up a chromakey type thing and CG a studio - what goes around comes around.

I reckon we've got one more new look before the new news centre opens in 2008 when there'll be another new look and most probably a trailer showing off the new newsroom.

I do agree, the above image does look too modern... something similar to the ITN New Centre setup or current newsroom. I think you're also right about the studio... if the newsroom is so great, they'll probably just have a 'World' style format, with the presenters right in the middle of the newsroom (although this does give off a less 'polished' look). I think the way they've included the corporate look into the current newsroom, I hope they do the same with the new one!

There was lots about it here and elsewhere last year when it was given the go-ahead.

Work has already started. They will knock down all of the new bits of broadcasting house, the 2 neighbouring buildings (one of which is the former home of radio 1) and refurbish the original Broadcasting House.

Well by the time that the place opens it'll be over a decade since the present News Centre opened. 10 years is a long time and all the state-of-the-art equipment won't be quite so state-of-the-art then

I can remember something about them wanting people to be able to look in on the newsroom and see the work which goes into preparing the news - kind of 'open to the people'.

Problem is balancing this with security.

I'm pretty sure there have been pictures before on this forum of the new BH.

I'll have a search around and see what I can find.

That'ld be great! He also read that the newsroom would be bombproof, and that they'd only let people access certain area sof program making... they're doing the same at the new Birmingham headquarters in the Mailbox... a very up market complex, where people can go in and seen whats going on...

140 studios!!!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds quite incredible.

Here is the full article

The BBC's much-trumpeted plans for a £250 million news centre in central London face being scuppered by one of the capital's most powerful landlords.

Howard de Walden Estates is seeking a court injunction to stop the BBC turning Broadcasting House, near Regent's Park, into the world's biggest broadcasting news hub.

The company, which owns 100 acres of prime residential property in the area, claims that the proposed redevelopment would bring a reduction in the value of some of its luxury buildings.

But being forced to scrap its plans for Broadcasting House would be a disaster for the BBC, which has already unveiled plans for a glass-and-marble palace at the site of its historic headquarters.

The corporation intends to consolidate its entire television and radio news operation at the revamped complex by 2008.

Designed by Sir Richard McCormac, it will have 140 studios, a central atrium and a newsroom half the size of a football pitch, and construc tion is due to begin next month.

The futuristic redevelopment involves demolishing four buildings and excavating to within three metres of the underground Victoria Line.

But Howard de Walden Estates has filed a writ at the High Court in London, seeking a court order to prevent it going ahead.

Simon Baynham, the company's managing director, said: 'We sold the site to the BBC in the Thirties. At the time of the deal, the BBC signed a restrictive covenant promising not to build on the site above a certain height. These proposals breach that covenant.'

It is thought that the company may drop its claim in exchange for at least £10m in compensation for its losses.

Yesterday a BBC spokesperson said: 'We have received a writ from Howard de Walden Estates, seeking an injunction to restrict the redevelopment of Broadcasting House. We are currently in discussions with them to resolve the issue.'

It is a lot, but bear in mind the term studio means everything from a large-ish TV studio to small single person radio booths.

Bush house has a very large amount of studios due to the large number of services it provides

That looks pretty nice!

I wonder if it's a preview of what we will see in News Studios in 2008. The current Newsroom is in the style of the current sudios.

I read somewhere today a major propery owner near Broadcasting House is appealing against the expansion because they say it will reduce the value of their property.
