I was flicking around the regions tonight and I noticed that BBC2W was showing Dads Army - they achieved a 4:3 aspect ratio by broadcasting black bars either side.

Network BBC2, Scotland and NI were as normal - which on my HDMI SKYHD Connection forces everything in Widescreen hence 'stretchy vision'.

Well done BBC2W !

Normally I have to go back to Scart Viewing for the correct ratio or adjust settings in the HDMI Viewing Menu on my LG TV.

Does BBC Wales do this as the norm now? If so why can't network do it?

I noticed this too a few weeks ago, on an episode of 'Murder, She Wrote' IIRC.

4:1! Doesn't that mean the image is 4 times taller than it is wide‽

Makes me glad everything in 4:3 on SKY HD box is displayed in 4:3 on my set, no strechy-vision,.

DOH 4.3 not 4.1 - yeah I know size isn't everything Wink

Anyway back to the plot.... it would be useful if TV Stations broadcast the side black bars when screening broadcasts in 4.3 - it would help those poor HD Viewers like me who like to watch upscaled broadcasts via HDMI but whose TV's won't automatically adjust the aspect ratio correctly when viewing in this mode.

What, 4.3? So it's now 4.3:1 rather than just 4:1? :p

It was like this on BBC1 England too.

It's looks to me like the programmes were on new masters with the Phil Jupitus links on he beginning. This would mean that the whole programme would be in 16:9 (the links were) and they can't change ratio mid-programme, hence it was pillarboxed

If you set 'Output Format' to 'Auto' rather than 1080i or 720p then SD 4:3 (12F12) transmissions will be output from the box with the correct switching signal.

Switching back to an HD channel, will cause the box to switch to 1080i, though it does thrash around a bit to do that.

No need at all for them to broadcast 4:3 programmes in a 16:9 frame. Digital receivers are capable of handling that themselves, which means viewers can then set them up to how they want them (black bars, cropped or - god forbid - stretched).
