I have a small problem with my television set in my bedroom. Its not widescreen, or on a digital platform, but yesterday my television couldnt decide if it wanted the BBC 2 Widescreen Ident, or the BBC Two ordinary ident. Is it a fault at the BBC or is it my television set?
Could a technical person help me please

Carlton's idents are 4:3 on analogue though, aren't they?
In London they're always 14:9 on analogue - I don't know about other Carlton regions

I don't understand! What do you mean 'it couldn't decide'? If you have a normal tv and normal analogue signal then your TV wouldn't have to 'decide'. If it was broadcast 16:9 on analogue from the BBC, you would have seen it 16:9 on your tv screen!!
sometimes the ratio on analogue gets mixed up and the reception licks between 4:3 14:9 and 16:9 as well as a faded version of 14:9

I like the way the idents ratio matches the programme or film ratio following it. This means we still get to see 4:3 idents. I have noticed on the ITV digital outputs on Sky Digital, they do the same, programme's that are 4:3 have a 4:3 ident before them, previously I didn't think ITV did this. Notice how the old BBC TWO Idents looked so much better in 4:3!

Only in the Granadaland regions though (and Channel). Carlton for example has widescreen idents before *every* programme and does the switching through black after the ident and before the programme. Granadaland switch between the last trailer and the ident.
what's this thing about ORIGINAL IDESCREEN? Surely if you have a widescreen digital transmittion available u don't have to put any stupid black bars on digital.
I don't mind films being shown in proper 16:9 on analogue as i think it looks nice but 14:9 should stay as the standard analogue widescreen.

Thanks for the info Asa, that's probably why I thought none of the regions did it bcos I used to have to watch Carlton before ITV on Sky Digital came along, I've been watching Yorkshire & Tyne Tees lately. And I've been recording the Hearts idents, that's why I noticed this.
