Has anybody noticed how much BBC2 seem to rely on News 24 every Saturday morning. Weekend 24 begins at 6am and finishes at 10am. Is BBC2 controller Jane Root ran out of ideas for this schedule? I used to really enjoy BBC2's Saturday morning schedule with Weekend 24 starting at 8am until 9am and then a film followed by Saturday Kitchen at 10.30am.

What about The Sharp end of the week with Clive Anderson, which has just finished its run?

Was the commissioning of a live series not good enough for you?

And on that bombshell, what happened to Weekend with Rod Liddle and Kate Silverton?

They are going through several newsy formats at the moment. Both of which so far have been good.

I'm sorry I don't mean to sound rude or offensive. To be honest The Sharp End was good to watch but it wasn't to my personal taste. Everybody has different tastes, but I hardly call 4 straight hours of simultanious News 24 coverage a good idea for a Saturday morning, in fact I call it cheap scheduling if I'm honest.
Even an hour of The Simpsons from 9am until 10am would be different and at least would compete alongside CBBC on BBC1. Saturday Kitchen is also a great series, but the slot between 6am and 10am is far too long I feel for news coverage, especially for those who have Digital TV.

The thing is, it's all part of the BBC's idea of showing Breakfast every morning between 6 and 9, which to my mind is a good idea. Until a couple of years ago there was no chance of seeing any news in the morning at the weekend. It's good that Breakfast (or on Saturdays Weekend 24) has become a permanent fixture in the schedules.

Saturday kitchen was excellent - made for a good alternative to kids shows in the morning Smile

Well you must admit that the schedules today on BBC2 are slightly better than what they had in the 80's at weekends - about 7 solid hours of the Open University (and that scary trumpet music!)

It all went downhill after they revamped it IMO. They changed the music (which, bizzarely sounded the same as the Wright Stuff) and then Gregg Wallace disappeared.

Those changes co-incided with the BBC farming out the production of Saturday Kitchen to an independent producer I believe. The earlier series were produced in-house...
