There's always been a tradition of popular shows moving from BBC2 to BBC1 e.g Match of the Day, Ground Force, Changing Rooms, French and Saunders, Absolutely Fabulous, Have I Got News For You, The Kumars, Smith and Jones. Fawlty Towers was first shown on BBC2 and repeats have been on BBC1. So it's not a new phenomenon.

That's true but BBC2's audience share is in a shocking state this won't help matters.

Well it was on before Restoration Village on Friday so it seems that they are taking some of them out of storage.

Seems fine for me for shows on BBC Three and Four to graduate to BBC Two (e.g. Little Britain, Bodies), and for shows from BBC Two to graduate to BBC One (Little Britain, Who do you think you are? etc.)

The Apprentice will solve BBC One's Wednesday night ratings problem (assuming it stays in the same slot as the first two series).

The BBC has confirmed that Alan Sugar's now-infamous bawl "You're fired" is soon to be heard on BBC1, as The Apprentice upgrades from BBC2.
The hit show - which mixes business acumen with reality TV-style entertainment - is to move to the BBC's flagship channel when it returns for a third series in the new year.

Produced by Talkback Thames, The Apprentice will move to BBC1 while the complementary show The Apprentice: You're Fired, hosted by Adrian Chiles, will switch to BBC2 from its previous home on digital channel BBC3.

Roly Keating, the controller of BBC2, said the move was "a natural evolution for a great show".

"We've been proud to help build The Apprentice into one of the most talked-about and successful series of recent years," said Mr Keating.

"We look forward to continuing to be part of The Apprentice experience with You're Fired and to nurturing other powerful business entertainment formats such as Dragons' Den."

Peter Fincham, the controller of BBC1, said he was delighted with the show's arrival on his channel.

"It's a strikingly modern and highly compelling series which audiences love, and it's made an unlikely but utterly watchable star out of Sir Alan Sugar."

The first series of The Apprentice, which was broadcast in February 2005, attracted an average audience of 2.5 million and an 11% share of the audience, with the finale peaking at 3.8 million and a 17% share.

Series two, which aired from February this year, was seen by an average audience of 4.4 million viewers, a 19% share, peaking at 6 million and 27% for the final show.

Precisely! Great for BBC1 but BBC2 has been screwed over.

Very lazy by BBC1, instead of creating their own shows, just nick them from BBC2

I'm really not sure what the remit is for BBC2, it's not very clear, and will only get worse as we approach digital switchover

Surely part of the job of BBC Two is to create these hits that BBC One cherry pick

At the end of the day it's one BBC, and moving a guaranteed hit off BBC Two creates a space in the schedule and far more importantly the budget (making the apprentice won't be cheap given the need to buy licensing rights for the show) of BBC Two to try new formats.

BBC One is always going to be more mainstream than the edgy BBC Two. BBC Three is even more edgy than Two could dare to be.

This is all part of having a balanced portfolio of channels.

The Apprentice was edgy and original when it first burst onto the scene- it's still a great show (the best reality format out there in my opinion), but by series 3 it's firmly in the nation's consciousness and is ripe for BBC One.

These successful BBC2 shows are going to BBC1 because they are desperate for a few more hits. This is leaving a hole on BBC2 that won't necessarily be filled straight away. In principal you're right when you say it's one BBC, but I can say that I'm in one family but if I keep giving money to them and don't replace the money I have I'll be in trouble.

I've always wanted to meet ones of these 'mainstream' households who never turn there TV's off BBC1 and are amazed by these 'new' shows that apear like The Kumars, Have I Got News For You etc Rolling Eyes

Here's what I say:- BBC2 your losing shows that move over to BBC1 yeah why not fill that void by putting American Dad & Family Guy on in their place that way people might actully get to 'SEE' them????
