I think you're taking the wrong lesson from this - I would have thought the more obvious one to learn is "Everybody took the piss when TumbleTower was making up pointless, ambiguous abbreviations. Don't be like TumbleTower".

Communication requires clear, unambiguous meaning. "NW" is ambiguous. You're not Tumble Tower, you're not even DVB Cornwall. If you mean network, type those ever-so-hard-to-reach extra 5 letters. If you mean north-west, use the INTERNATIONALLY AGREED COMPASS POINT ABBREVIATION for north west.
