BBC2 Bounce A Ident

Does it contain the BBC2 Paint soundtrack? (March 2007)

Didn't want to take the BBC2 Rebrand thread off topic.

Ok so you may be thinking I've gone mad after reading the topic description but hear me out!

I was browsing through various pieces of TV pres videos on Youtube when I realised something. If you listen to the very end of the Bounce A ident it sounds remarkably similar to the first few seconds of the classic Paint ident.

I had never noticed this before; probably because it was rarely shown in full.

It made me wonder if LN made it sound similar intentionally to hark back to the 'golden age' of BBC2 pres. I don't suppose many people would ever of had time to notice as the playout of full idents is usually reserved only for crossovers to Ceefax or the Learning Zone late at night.

So has anyone else ever noticed this or do you still think I've gone mad?!

There is a bit of a similarity. They must have had the same whooshy sound effect programmed into the Lambie-Nairn Bontempi Organ.

Spooky... I reckon someone mixed it in, because it sounds exactly the same, albeit with a bit of pitch bend.

A composer wasn't named in the publicity for the 2001 rebrand, but Tony and Gayna Sadler were involved with the 1991 set. Maybe they stuck around?

Sounds like it's been mixed in. Kind of seems like it was going into the Paint video as some sort of a montage partition and someone cut it to black before the video came up...

Yes; I've always thought the end of Bounce contained the Paint intro, and now I'm glad someone else noticed this.

Just a pity L-N weren't in contention for the current set as if they'd worked on it we might have had some subtle references to the idents of old again.

To add *possible* links to the past in the yellow idents, Remote obviously had similarities to Car (most of the set may have been inspired by it, robotic 2's and yellow background), and the Invisible Walls sequence was reminiscent of the old Corridors sting, abeit not as fast.

Oh and just to be a bit of a pedant, you marked the Paint link as full but it isn't. The full sequence is nearly a minute Razz

Might be worth adding that while it's not as obvious (and a 'similarity' rather than copy), the drums in the background of Bounce, are the same rhythm pattern and general tempo as those around the 20 to 30" mark in Catalyst.

The choice of sound given to the percussion is different, but the arrangement is the same enough for me to suspect that was part of the inspiration for that section.

I don't think Catalyst gets enough recognition sound-wise for just how dramatic it is combined with the sequence of the '2' is engulfed in flame. Easily one of the best tracks from a standout bunch, but I've yet to hear a clean chunk in Stereo and probably never will.

I should think this has been spotted by a number of people, but for the rest, found this 99/00 BBC page with a small image showing the filming of what looks like Wave (Day).
