Well why should they go fully widescreen on idents, it would mean that you would always see the switch from 16:9 into 4:3 and it would look crap. It's much better to do it between the final trailer & ident when the screen fades to balck, it means you don't see the change.
All they have to do is show the Ident in Widescreen, Fade the ident to black in Widescreen, then fade into the program from black in 4:3. Change while its gone black. It looks much better on captures if you can get the ident to fade out and it looks much better on Widescreen TV, as you also know when the press the Record button!
The BBC's policy is always to match the ident's aspect ratio to the incoming programme.
It means the Directors in network can then mix or cut into the programme in whatever way they want. If you have to hide a widwescreen switch, or an analogue conversion, its best to do it before you get to the programme.
Watch ITV doing it the other way - you so often catch strange shapes at the start of programmes - its not nice!

but channel 4 always do it wonderderfully, I wonder why. Maybe it's because Channel 4 is a great channel and ITV is just dire.

I don't know where fred gets his information from. There is no set policy about making the idents the same shape as the programme for the BBC. It's just what people prefer to do as a result of a suggestion when the ability to hide aspect ratio switches in the black came in.
Personally I always (apart from sport) do the switch into the programme a la channel 4. Partly because I think 16:9 idents on analogue look naff and makes the junction look disjointed as does having to put black before the ident. No one tells me off about it and I don't think there's a P45 in my in tray.

Fred does have insider knowledge too.... for instance, some Directors choose to do wipes on air - thats not to say the magagers like them!
Matching the aspect ratio on the symbol to the incoming programme is known as a best practise - P45 or not!

Sorry but you're so incorrect. Maybe it's you that should have the P45. 16:9 idents on analogue are just something that ppl started doing and indeed a lot of doubt was raised but no rule was made - a suck it and see attitude was adopted and was soon after forgotten about. The only policy/best practice is to hide any aspect changes in the black.
Anyway I'm not commenting any further don't care what else is said
It'll also be easier when we finally go 100% widescreen and have done with it.
Analogue is becoming a real annoyance as it would be so much easier to broadcast everything in 16:9 with old legacy 4:3 material put out in 4:3 pillarbox.
