BBC Cuts: BBC2 daytime, Local Radio, Wimbledon/F1 "at risk"

Originally BBC2 "to axe daytime programming" (March 2011)

It would almost be full circle, 40 years ago the BBC LRs were effectively peak time opt outs of Radio 2

Although those were the days when they were new, FM only and subsequently had very few listeners

That would basically be repeating what's happened with commercial radio stations over the last couple of years, most notably with the Global Radio owned stations.

Yes, there's very little local media at all now, local newspapers are closing or shrinking all over the place and there's very little proper local commercial radio. Even in London most of the local stations are now just parts of national networks

Local radio now set for the axe, to be replaced with Radio 5 with opt-outs at Drivetime and Breakfast (as most commercial stations do now).

I suspect we'll see many such stories over the next few weeks as the worst possible scenario is revealed.

It's almost as if you haven't been reading the last page or two of discussion... Wink

Well we will if you keep repeating them over and over again......

Let's face it, the last 9 pages are moot anyway. 1) - There is no way in a post-DSO UK that BBC2's daytime output will be shelved in favour of rolling news, rolling Fireman Sam or anything else.

2) - There is equally no way that a DAB-obsessed BBC will push BBC 5 Live onto BBC Local Radio after 6am and before 1am. I do expect to see a bit more networking between regions, and possibly an ITV-style macro-region model replace some of the smaller regions. That is all.

Something will have to give, and some many changes will be needed to solve the currents, issues but it seems on one especial in the bbc is none the wiser

It has been suggested, by marksi, that they ditch the utterly hopeless and expensive DAB and invest in internet radio to save money instead. I doubt they'll take any notice as they're obsessed with flogging the dead horse that is DAB

I agree DAB is a dead horse, but until 3G coverage expands to cover virtually every stretch of road in the UK, (just like FM does) and the data caps are raised so that 18 hrs a day streaming is possible without incurring financial penalites, there is no other realistic method for consuming 'digital only' radio stations on the move ?

Pretty much the same argument, fine in towns and cities, but not cost effective in rural areas.

I wonder if DAB+ would solve the issue? Although of course Ofcom have taken an utterly insane decision to not broadcast in it until there is the hardware, and nobody shall make the hardware until the transitions are there. So we're stuck in MP2 forever.

No matter how you deliver it 'internet radio' is still very inefficient. Broadcasting is a fixed cost per listener/viewer - you chuck a bit of metal on top of a hill or in space and send it to everyone. Internet broadcasting requires a separate connection for each with the costs and limitations that produces.
