This story has been around for five days now, significantly NO mainstream daily newspapers have taken the story along, even moreso that Media Guardian hasn't mentioned it, also no comment from the BBC in either way has been made. Some clarity to indie producers, if this story 'had wheels', would have been needed by now to placate their business plans.

It gets a mention in the Guardian - specifically soliciting comments from the readers.

An opportunity here to rid the forum of fantasy schedules and wannabe controllers, and have them all go over there to tell people wot they reckon.

Don't nearly the whole of the uk have digital tv if they want bbc news they bung it on the actual bbc news channel not bbc 2.

By that logic why do millions of people watch a BBC or ITV bulletin each day? Rates that simply can't compare to the BBC News Channel or Sky News.

I think we can dismiss it for now as over-active imaginative speculation, that got into the wild.

Not withstanding the above, some limited changes to BBC TWO are inevitable in the context of the Licence fee review.

It seems that the TVF virus of not being able to check one page before in a thread to see if something's been mentioned now applies to checking one post back.

For the amount of 'opt out' programming, other than news, sport & current affairs, why have regional BBC One English Regions after DSO?

As I mentioned on the Midlands thread, there is an opt out on late Saturday night(which also involves the 2 Yorkshire regions & the South & SE regions too!), but how often do we get this sort of opt out? Very rare IMO.

Surely the regional streams would be better used on the News Channel, then BBC One & BBC Two can please themselves?

On a related subject, it seems there's some thought about merging BBC Local Radio with '5-Live' ?

If such a thing happened it would be very sad indeed, although the article needs to realise tomorrow is the 11th, not the 18th.

Well, it is the NUJ, Rolling Eyes

It would almost be full circle, 40 years ago the BBC LRs were effectively peak time opt outs of Radio 2

That would basically be repeating what's happened with commercial radio stations over the last couple of years, most notably with the Global Radio owned stations.

Didn't the Local Radio Brekky Shows grow out of the old Radio 4 Today opt outs?

In some areas, yes, that was the case with the younger BBC LRs that opened in the 80s, Devon, Cornwall, and Norfolk for instance. The appropriate R4 opts ceased the day before those stations launched.

However, I don't think that applied to the older late 60s/early 70s stations, they co-existed with the Radio 4 regional opts for some years. Although of course Radios Wales, Scotland, and Ulster were directly derived from their Home Service/R4 opts. That change came with the MW/LW re-shuffle in Nov 78. Radio 4 became a national UK service for the first time (using LW) and Wa, Sc, Ul became free standing stations using R4's old regional MW allocations, and 92-95 FM. It took quite some for R4 FM to expand into 'The Nations', using frequencies in the 'local radio' sub bands.
