I think they're absolutely right to hold some back to use more sparingly. That is what they did with the original 90s set and it has to be remembered most people are probably only seeing a handful of programme junctions across the week. Indeed I don't think I've actually watched anything on BBC2 since the relaunch.

With the original launch of the '2' in 1991 there were 9, 11 if you include the slight differences for the anvil and water idents. They launched on the same day and all were used regularly until new additions came along a few months later. BBC2 have launched with 16 new idents but keep using a handful more than others during the day and in primetime. It's more boring seeing the same ones over and over, I'd rather they use them all.

The three white idents tend to appear only at 9am, 11am and 12.15pm. Where the variety in that? Black and White Art ident not been seen now in two weeks. Same goes for Snake one. Its all well in good adding a new one, but why not use what is already in use.

No one has the right to moan about this point, Look at ch4 and the complaints of the overuse of the kids on bikes, or the use of the shorter versions only. I still love the full version of the hilltop one, it hardly ever appears.

Those three white idents could certainly used to introduce factual series in the evening. Why do they solely have to be for Victoria Derbyshire, News and Politics Live Monday to Friday then Newsnight in the evening? What’s the point of having 16 then sticking to around 6? It’s like the Window On The World idents where they went to South Africa to film several of the Chase idents then stopped showing them after a month and stuck us with Sunroof! It’s a waste of money.

Your got your wish, two of the white idents were used this afternoon for more interesting programmes.

The new 'Coloured Threads' ident also debuted in the 10pm junction on BBC Two Wales as well as network. Seems to be another fairly challenging one for the encoders, so maybe this is being slipped in now as part of their testing for the new HD versions of the nations. Very Happy

A bit different mind in that the looping for this new one seems much longer than the others. Indeed in the 20 second airings, it's not actually had a chance to play through fully yet as far as I can tell. It at least cycles Purple, Green, Red, Blue and you can see Orange sneaking in at the very end.

Ooh, I like the music for that one.
Very mysterious and odd.
Great ident too.

I saw that! As they should be! Thought one of the them should have been used before 100 Days To Victory instead of the multi-coloured swirly one. Mind you 100 Days To Victory did feel like a comedy in places so I could see their point! Laughing

I really like that threads/cotton ident. The music is not what I expected which makes it work even better because it has eerie, mysterious music.

I agree. The music production on these idents increases their effectiveness. I sometimes feel that it’s not appreciated enough - BBC One don’t think it’s a good thing anyway.

I think the audio is often the unsung hero of a great set of idents. I don’t think we’d love Carlton’s hearts half as much, for example, if they didn’t have that wonderful, bassy, dramatic soundtrack.

I very much agree Spencer. For me the current ITV idents would be awful without the variations of the tune to accompany them. In my opinion both the BBC One 2009 refresh (the ones that were altered) and Channel 4’s original 80s idents felt different when the music was changed.

It's also what let down the GMG hearts - the unused versions with the variations in theme for each ident are so much better.

It can work both ways though - when C4 launched their current idents it was great to have 4Score accompany them, but god, I'm sick of it now.

Oh yes, those unused ITV idents had wonderful scores.

The issue with the current channel 4 Ident music is that it’s the same variant for each. If they’d have created different versions we may not have that problem.

Absolutely. The original BBC One Helicopters ident music was absolutely beautiful - that choral solo was haunting and cinematic with a bleakness appropriate to a remote lighthouse.

What replaced it was so mundane, it might as well have accompanied footage of an EasyJet flight touching down at Luton.
