Channel 4 has had their logo since Day 1, so that gives it some heritage and staying power. If those 2's had been there from Day 1, that would be different
Let's be fair though. 26 years is nothing to be sniffed at.

That is true, and those original 2's came back in recent years, so they didn't go out without acknowledgement.
The 1991 - 2018
2
lasted the longest out of these, and looks the best of them all. It is the first time the channel doesn't have a solid form for it's branding. But it is good (at least to me) to move away from the long lasting 2, as it has possibly held the channel back from evolving. Whether it stands the test of time, that is to be seen. But it has shown itself to be flexible, which is always a good start.
The 2 shape was not the original 2 the channel has used for branding. After 27 years I think the channel is right to move on. I only wish they had ditched the logo and the Teal colour too.
And yet it has become a definitive logo for the channel and stayed on the channel for 28 years, specifically the original 2 brand and not the Window On The World/yellow era versions.
Let's put it this way. The Only Fools and Horses theme we have now is seen as the definitive version even though it wasn't there from day 1 of series 1.
I suppose, thinking about it, there would be more of a case to keep the '2' if that was the channel's sole identification logo. In reality, it's been used alongside four accompanying logos; the 1997 Gill Sans logo; the 2001 purple box; the 2007 teal box; and the current boxless logo. If the idea of this rebrand was to tidy up and streamline BBC Two's presentation, maybe having two logos wouldn't be the right idea.

My whole point about keeping the 2 is that when you look at it - you know it's BBC Two and everytime you see it you know what it identifies without needing text.
As good as the curvy idents are they are weaker in the sense of identifying the channel. If you took the BBC TWO text away you could be watching BBC Four.
The curves represent the inside shape of a number 2, it’s a new interpretation. We have to have to look forward and appreciate the quality of the new branding.

Maybe we'll grow a custom to the new symbol, and begin to associate that directly with BBC Two.

Yeah I appreciate what they've done and it's nice to see something fresh. The 2 is no more so that's that.

I don't think so TBH, since the new '2' is not really a symbol, it's just the curve in whatever material is being used. It's not something that can be used outside of the idents like the old '2' was.
As Larry says it does introduce a bit more consistency in the brand as BBC Two was the only channel that had two logos - the '2' itself, and the 'BBC TWO' wordmark in whatever form it's taken since 1997.
I'm not sure I'm particularly upset about the '2' going. The two successor ident packages to the original weren't as good or memorable, and in the second one they changed its distinctive shape anyway.
