I think you need to watch the ident again.

Just to be clear, which ident do you mean? If it's the Car Wing Mirror, there are no sparks or a cut-out - just trails of street lights and a rear-view in the reflection.

I am referring to that ident, and there are sparks that originate from inside the 2 and come flying out past the rims. At the beginning of the ident, the mirror is ostensibly a solid object, but there are parts of it where the 2 is obviously a cut-out, otherwise sparks wouldn't be flying out of it.

I would argue that Mirror is a closer analogue, given that it also features sparks flying out of the 2.

I really don't think I do. Again: it's not a cut-out. The sparks are similar, but they're a reflection of something through the mirror.

... that somehow extends past the rims of the mirror.

They're a reflection. In a mirror. That's literally the point of the ident.

This back and forth is totally pointless.

I think I'm going to have a stroke. The sparks come from inside the mirror and come flying out of it past the rims. The ident gives the illusion of a solid mirror at the beginning with the raindrops running down it but later subverts that notion by showing this:

...nope. Still don't think you can call it a cut-out, reasonably. It's hardly framed as one, unlike many others in the series.

EDIT: I'm being reply-limited for being a new member...urrgh.

It's not the point of it, because it's right at the end of the ident.

It's just an intriguing visual based around the concept of a mirror (hence the name MIRROR) with less meaning or thought behind it than the 90s idents had. It's not a cut-out from a scene, whichever way you, erm, cut it. I don't think there's a problem with me saying Seascape is more similar to Copper Cut-Out. I still maintain that view because the similarities are baked into the concept of the ident: it's a hole that waves go through.

You're probably very keen to express how you know better than me about this, so I'll try not to damage your feeling of superiority any more, if that makes you feel better.

EDIT TWO:

So?

According to whom?

No, mate. I'm not keen to go on some self-flagellating rant about idents because I'm mystified by the fact that we're even having this conversation.

If you're mystified by the fact we're having this conversation, perhaps you shouldn't have told me patronisingly that I needed to go and watch the ident again?

And that's according to me and my own personal opinion. I feel like Mirror is an ident where the tone it produces is more important than its particulars. That's my personal opinion. I don't think it's like, say, Steam, where they took one idea and ran with it (out of necessity due to technological limitations): where the scope is that there's water being dropped on a two. The concept of Mirror is a bit looser than that: we wouldn't be having this conversation otherwise . Considering the (poor) musical change, there's an obvious fixation on style as opposed to core concept.

In the video you linked to, the 'sparks' only just precede the fade to black. The ident might be longer than that, I don't know, but it'd be a strange way to build up to something. I think the climax of the ident is when it's zoomed out, not right before it fades to black.

Both of you need to drop it now.

Better still, I'm going to close this as we're a long way from the launch and it's nothing to do with the current set anyway.
