New ident ‘Discovery’ - p89

Are there two versions then or is it just two cuts of the same ident?

No, I think what's meant by that is when the ident loops back round to its starting formation at 13 seconds, it's using slightly different textures/colours (darker brown at the start). Compare 0:00 with 0:13.

If this is called 'Thought-Provoking 2', does that mean that the original 'Thought-Provoking' - or, at least, the edited version - has been officially retired?

Yes that's what I mean.

When it loops back there's a subtle difference with different textures. And it IS called Thought Provoking 2 and Thought Provoking isn't retired, just not used as much as it should be!

Does anyone know the announcer on BBC Two this evening with the Irish accent? Voice sounds familiar.
Hello, good evening, and remain indoors.

The BBC Archive Twitter and Facebook are today claiming that this BBC2 symbol was introduced on this day in 1979:

This is despite evidence that the previous ident was still in use later in 1979. The latest use I can find of the horizontal striped 2 (with a black rather than blue background) is at the start of this Top Gear clip from 4th May 1979 (warning: video contains hairy disc jockey).

While the Wikipedia article reckons it must have been introduced at some point between 9th and 23rd June 1979.

If only I had been born a few years earlier, I'm sure I'd be able to recite the exact date!

A few years ago, I took some time to try and pinpoint dates for some key BBC pres events. This was one of the items that I looked into. Using recordings from TV Room's archive + anything that was available online, the 9th and 23rd June was the window I pinned it down to. The relevant page on TV Room carried those dates for quite a while. This is not the first time I've pointed out the error in this BBC Archive automated Twitter machine. I'd be interested to know though where the 1st March date came from - it presumably wasn't just plucked from the air? I wonder was it launch date that was pencilled in but didn't happen?

Noticed on Facebook just now that Transdiffusion also seems to think it was this date too.

Well, they're wrong. I've had it pointed out to me that the 1st March date appeared online, and that BBC Archive may simply have taken that at face value. So, potentially nothing much to be read into the 1st March.

The TV Museum is going to have a hoke through their recordings - so, hopefully, something will turn up that will allow us to be a little more definitive.

Something that I noticed about Thought Provoking.

Well, I’m not sure what this programme is, but a trailer just went out on BBC One in the North West directly after North West Tonight (a slot often used for regional trails) with this erm, concoction of an end cap:
*

The trail just had the BBC logo at the bottom until the end cap.

And that’s what happens when you leave a job to someone who doesn’t give a crap.
