Should BBC1 steel BBC2's big hits?

Who do you think you are to move to BBC1 (February 2006)

It's nothing new, but is it right for BBC1 to be steeling yet another programme from BBC2 as Who do you think you are? is the latest hit to switch channels.

Ten years ago BBC1 was guaranteed a significantly bigger audience than BBC2, but today it's a different story - with the channels much closer and BBC2 often able to overtake BBC1 in the primetime ratings.

The only thing that tends to happen when programmes switch to BBC1 is they get a hole in the schedule plugged (I see yet another police fly on the wall series airs tonight!) - while BBC2 is left with a big hole.

At the moment BBC2 is being beaten up from all directions - by it's own family. BBC4 have taken the serious content, BBC3 the funny stuff with big brother BBC1 waiting to take anything of value BBC2 comes up with!

Agreed all the way. BBC1 nearly always nab BBC2's successes and I think BBC2 doesn't earn the respect it deserves. I have always preferred BBC2 to 1. I personally believe that most of the programmes are better, and I think it's wrong to to transfer the good one's to the "main channel", just to put something on "the ONE to watch trailer", which really annoys me.

It's always been policy to transfer the successful programmes to the 'mothership' in order to expose it to the widest possible audience, has it not? ITV and Channel 4 also put programmes on their main networks if they've done well on their smaller channels.

Hardly what you could call 'steeling' (sic).

That is different though - ITV and C4's "smaller" channels don't have the reach of their terrestrial counterparts.

While transferring hits from BBC3 and BBC4 to BBC1/2 is understandable, BBC2 has the same reach as BBC1.

How can BBC2 be expected to build up a brand if it's most successful programmes are nicked by BBC1 - leaving it with BBC1's rejects (and was there any reason to send a bunch of popstars to Italy for a Top of the Pops Olympic Special)?

If BBC 1 does keep taking on every success that BBC 2 has, what does that leave for the channel in the future.

With digital switch off there will be little point in showing children's programmes as there will already be the CBBC Channel. This means eventually BBC 1 will take on the daytime output as well probably.

So what will be left, a few educational programmes, a bit of politics and business and what else?

Seems to me over the last few years alot of BBC 2's core programmes moved over to the digital channels weakening its position.

I'd have to agree with what's been said here. The advent of BBC THREE and FOUR suddenly made BBC TWO much weaker, because they broadcast programmes that TWO would have taken in the pre-digital years.

While BBC THREE isn't as great as it could be, BBC FOUR does show, IMO, many quality interesting programs. It does not surprise me the BBC TWO tends to air a slice of FOUR's output on occasion in later hours; it fits perfectly.

Having BBC ONE start taking TWO's greater successes is just not right. These are the two only BBC services on analog terrestrial, and given the situation, it makes no sense for its neighbour to start chipping away at any exclusive programmes it has left.

Just occurred to me - BBC TWO are screening a programme about dance on the Learning Zone at the moment (that has just shown a Capoeira demonstration by the looks of it...) - The Learning Zone has been a mainstay of the channel for some time now, running overnight; it is one of the few things that has always had a place on TWO.

I guess BBC2 have also been hit by BBCi.

There seem to be alot of events from the Winter Olympics which in the past would probably have got coverage on BBC2, but are now covered live only on BBCi.

The same goes for alot of the rest of the BBC Sport output too - probably most notably Snooker (though in my personal opinion, that's no loss!)

I think BBC2 has had its fair share of snooker matches within the last 10 months:

April/May - World Chapionships
October - Grand Prix Chapionships
Late October - Pot Black
December - UK Chapionships
January - The Masters

And of course, there's the World Snooker again starting 2 months today. I think this the most snooker BBC2 have ever broadcast within a year.

The Pot Black tournament was actually on BBC One.

Are the foreign versions of TOTP still made, that would have the same set design etc of the UK version?

I was wondering whether quite a few Euro TV companies, along with the Beeb forked out jointly for a TOTP special in Turin, that recorded several acts, then assembled them into a specific country friendly version of the show?

The reasons I thought this were, quite a few of the links were cutaways(as indeed is the normal show, depending on when the individual performance was recorded.), plus they appeared to have an act I never heard of (Mattafix), who were big in Italy at the time!

Slightly off topic, bearing in mind Sue Barker was co-presenting, I'm surprised they didn't sneak a Cliff Richard clip in, based on their past history!

Correct if I'm wrong peeps, but don't Cliff & Sue have a long friendship over tennis at least?
