The 'One Show' is OK as brainless fodder while I'm making/eating by tea (and simultaneously recording two soaps on Sky+), but I wouldn't hang around on BBC One for an entire hour of the stuff.

The fact that they have short and snappy items may come across as a very light way of dealing with issues, but it's not supposed to be a serious programme in most respects, so they would have to change the format and editorial aspect considerably to stretch it out to a full hour 5 days a week.

Indeed, I dont think you could take the 'Inside Out' journalistic front and present it under the current neon rave studio and jazz hands gospel theme tune!

I wouldn't mind a 45-minute One Show - not sure about a full hour though.

How about extending BBC News to 7.15pm and have The One Show 7.15pm-8pm?

Still sounds like a cost cutting measure

What do you suggest they do though, extend the BBC News at Six (which would mess up the news channel) or extend regional news which would be much more expensive?

I think The One Show has run it's course - at least change the god awful theme tune and presenters, although the filmed segments are usually quite good - unless they are health related, which most of them seem to be!

I think the One Show is fine as it is. Don't think it would work as an hour long programme though.

If it's run it's course why do the viewing figures continue to rise?

I do think the One Show being on for an hour every week night is little too much. Moving EastEnders to 8pm is a good move though

It wouldn't harm The One Show to take a break every so often rather than being on air every night of the week. For example BBC1 are now nicking Masterchef off BBC2, and it would make more sense for The One Show to vacate the slot for 6 weeks or so to allow Masterchef to be stripped at 7pm, rather than the BBC putting it in the schedules in a later random slot.

I think the last Celebrity Masterchef ended up going out on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8pm, sometimes in an hour-long slot, sometimes in a 30-minute slot and sometimes not at all - compared to previous years where it had been simply slotted in at 7pm for a three week run.

Isn't Masterchef actually going back to its original station as I seem to recall the original Masterchef was on BBC1 on Sunday afternnon/evening (sharing its timeslot with The Clothes Show and Bookworm)

It was a different format though IIRC. The BBC2 Masterchef is what was Masterchef Goes Large

Though the viewing figures seem to tell a different story.

It has turned round the ratings for a slot that was often getting below 2 million, to a slot that now averages more than 5 million and recently got more than 6 million on a couple of occasions, even whilst up against Emmerdale.

No wonder the BBC want to see if they can do the same trick in the 7.30 slot where non-EastEnders shows are often not doing as well. Watchdog performs OK - only losing some of The One Show's inheritance, but Inside Out isn't doing so well nationally.

(Ironically, now it has settled on a "celebrity interview" format it is the most watched chat show in Britain... It out performs Jonathan Ross...)

Oh yes - remember it fondly. They've always gone for something a bit "out there" as theme music - better than playing safe! (And the current theme, like the original Nationwide one, is memorable, and the kind of thing that you hear in the kitchen and realise the show is starting)
