On Tuesday night, Tumbler was used into the thought provoking ONE Life, which this week told the tragic story of living with mental illness. Now before you criticise me for having the usual pick about which ident should be used, on this occasion, I thought that it was highly inappropriate. Usually, Skateboarders or Capoeria is used for understandable reasons.
I remember reading somewhere there was policy on how the idents should be used, but recently this seems to have gone out of the window.
Here in the Midlands we often have Tai Chi with the full flip, dispite it been "adapted" following viewer complaints. And yes it does make me feel sick...
About a week ago we have Skateboarders into the news, with the national headlines bed rather than the music, mind thats a mistake not a change.
But in reply to your original point Joe they do seem to using no set lot for certain programmes at the minute.
I spotted this too - what a shambles. Rather like Scottish TV using Ant and Dec into a John Pilger documentary.
For BBC1 to place one of its tackiest idents before such a sensitive programme was, at best, sloppy. And while not wishing to tread old ground, this makes you wonder what Lorraine Heggessey was thinking back in 2002.
Of course, in times of National Reflection a ballet dance is entirly suitable. Think Not!
And wishing to tread on old ground, Heggessey you may have the ability to change the channels fortunes, but your ideas of pres are, well IMO like taking a water colour challenge. The women should never have been allowed near the pres department...
Tumbler is one of the worst (if not the worst) Ident to play out before programmes dealing with such issues. Thinking about it, Capoeira seems to be the most suitable choice, but even that isn't really ideal.
Maybe a still of Capoeira could be used for those programmes?

They used that for the death of the Queen mother when the dancer idents launched in late March 2002, and even that didn't look appropriate at all. The only thing that can provide such seriousness is the clock.

A still of Ballet was used to introduce the announcement of the Queen Mother's death.
If you look back though, BBC ONE have used idents inappropriately (IMO) before - the more noticable examples being:
Christmas Puddings ahead of a programme on the Asian Tsunami
Christmas Puddings for news
Festival just 15 hours after the Pope had died
Saying that other idents have been used in strange positions for example on a day (Sunday) with rugby programming, Haka was used in an earlier junction for something like the Heaven and Earth Show and then I think Tango was used for the actual rugby. You would have thought Haka would have been used for the rugby considering that it is a rugby dance.
