For the first time I'm actually feeling a bit disappointed about a channel controller stepping down and I've never cared in the past to be honest! He seemed to have his head screwed on, came across as genuinely wanting the best for the channel and keen to publicly make himself accountable on several issues during his tenure. Blameless? Certainly not, but I think he should have been allowed to ride the storm.

Agreed on all points. What made Peter ideal for the job is that he came in from outside the BBC and had a genuine belief in the channel; sometimes you need an "outsider"'s perspective to shake things up. And it worked. Had BBC1 been named Channel Of The Year at any other point in its history? No. Peter knew how to achieve the right mix of entertainment and more serious programming. There were a few faux pas (normal daytime programming on New Year's Day, Saturday CBBC to BBC2) but no-one is entirely perfect.

One wonders if Peter's position would have been more tenable had he not come from outside the BBC. The name Greg Dyke springs to mind for similar reasons. But I have to admire his nobility in falling on his sword for the sake of the channel.

How long before we see the next channel controller instigating a "review of the channel's branding to see whether it is still relevant"?!

Sadly, rebranding one's channel does seem to be used as a way of showing you've "arrived" these days - and for BBC1 we have to go back to the days of Michael Jackson (1996-97) to find a BBC1 controller who did not give the channel a new look. Michael was also the last BBC2 controller not to rebrand that channel, but looking back it would seem that in those days permission to do so might have been needed from a higher authority than the channel controllers themselves.

With BBC1 knowing how deeply unpopular its previous look was, not to mention having commissioned special typography for the channel - you do have to wonder what'll happen now.

It's a shame that Peter Fincham is having to go as I thought he was doing quite well with improving BBC One. However, unfortunately, the idea of accountability means that he is ultimately responsible for all the actions regarding BBC One, even if it really is the Press Department's fault. What annoys me is that he made the mistake and apologised for it yet still this isn't enough to satisfy some people.

Fincham has tried to draw a line under the affair. I think he should be respected for that. The media have indeed got their blood sacrifice, let's hope they leave the BBC to sort out the problem internally that his departure will now cause.

EDIT:
Also ban people from this site with so little knowledge that they post statements like this:

If the BBC had con'd us out of millions aka GMTV then yes I might understand but that wasn't the case, just some minor deception

Little boy - GMTV has nothing to do with BBC, or perhaps you are more stupid and don't understand the meaning of "aka".

Perhaps it's true, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", especially in the hand of idiots!

Although I wouldn't have used aka, this does make sense as "con'd us out of millions, aka GMTV" is a clever pun - i.e. taking GMTV as people who just exist to con people out of millions. Technically, it is wrong but that doesn't matter, does it?

There goes this year's Christmas ident then Laughing

They've already started planning the Christmas ident haven't they?

I know you're being sarcastic.

Anyway, Mr Fincham did genuinely care for the channel but again, I reckon he did have his faults in the process. Thats just my opinion.

Interesting day!

It is BBC One and not BBC1 as people on this thread have been using and indeed as have BBC News themselves!

Clearly the branding is failing...

I apologise, but I have to say that I honestly don't have a clue what you're talking about.

You're just such a negative person to almost everyone and anyone on this forum, is it because you can't stand up to people in the real world you take out your problems here? I just feel sorry for you in many ways.

I think we may see a premature death of the circles, but not for a little while, as that would launch an attack on dear old Aunty by the Mail .

I fail to see what Peter Fincham has done that is so good.

Is improve the idents good enough for everyone ?

What about the programmes ?

As for BBC ONE ( Rolling Eyes ) being channel of the year- what was the competition ?
