It just had to be the one circular / spherical thing I didn't think of...!
Just 2 variants will probably insufficient for the duration they will stay on-air, and would get tired quickly.
There may be 3 versions (for example Short, Long, and a Slow / Sombre one for news bulletins) but I doubt any more than that, unless they have shot both day and night versions, which would be a neat touch.
I suppose if I had to choose the time of day, I'd go for a night scene; makes more sense to me.
Sounds an interesting ident though I have to echo comments that have already been posted - firstly tomorrow is way too early (it should be Friday 22nd December in the evening at the earliest) and if they are airing tomorrow then there has to be more than one ident otherwise everyone will be sick to death of seeing them before Christmas.
The best bet would be to air them later and have two or three different idents, with a normal, short and news variant for them all. This would bring some more variety into it.
The Christmas ident has just been shown on BBC One East for local programming. Was OK, if a bit short (although it's likely they played a short version of it). Can't really describe it better than it was described earlier in the thread. It ends with a wide shot with the giant snowball in the centre with the circle being formed by sparkles. The music is just a christmasy version of the normal theme.

eh...? i thought it was launching TOMORROW! whats going on?!?
I would say post-Balloon, the only fairly good ident BBC One has had, was the first dancers "Snowflake" kids that ran for 2 years on the trot. I especially think that's mainly down to getting the music on that one quite right, compared to the following years with the Puds (not so good) and the Wonka-inspired Tree set which musically was too dark IMO.
I won't be surprised if I find the new Snowball set isn't as good as that. The idea itself is rather plain, and we are in a Red Bee era after all!

I think the snowflakes and the puds were both great idents and the music for both sets were spot on. Last year was certainly different, and the ident itself was great but like you said the music was far too dark for Christmas.
This year's just doesn't sound great at all. I'm imagining it now from the description and it just sounds so bland. I'll wait until tomorrow to see but I won't get too excited.
