2009 and 2015 are also not reusable - because of the presence of the Doctor. The last few junctions of the 2009 one on New Years Day 2010 used the news version, because the Tenth Doctor had just "died". 2015's, the Sprout Boy one, has Peter Capaldi's version in the main animation. And since he'll also "die", on Christmas Day this time...

2008's probably shouldn't be reused either - it featured Wallace and Gromit.

The Strictly ident shows that the regular circles being gone is no reason for past idents not to be reused. Any of them without a programme specific reference are usable as long as the BBC One logo doesn't change. Any of these:

No-one wants to see a guerning David Tenant whoosh around behind raindeers... probably not even David Tennant himself. It was an awful idea to have one ident over Christmas which he always appeared in.

I would quite like a Christmas presentation package on the BBC that doesn't affiliate or tie to a particular brand. Something clever, modern and generic in terms of content.

Fully agree with you there, Mike.

I think the last time BBC One did a Christmas ident without the standard branding was way back in 1990. And a very good one it was too!

I don't mind there being branding, I was thinking more of the Doctor Who/Wallace and Gromit type stuff. If the branding could be subtle though, that could give them more scope to try something new. And not 12 Christmas trees in a zumba class where the only motion is the camera shaking.

Oh Mike, you've spoiled their surprise!! Wink

True, so maybe they could re-use it if they wanted to. However, it's unlikely as (a) BBC One haven't recycled a Christmas ident for 10 years now, and (b) it's an ident from the now defunct Circles era.

Looking at the Strictly ident, I don't think that'll bother them.

The first couple of Christmas idents in the balloons era had no balloon in sight.

I really liked the 1997 Twelve Days of Christmas idents.

1999 and 2000 were nice, put also love the simplicity of the 1998 idents, again no balloon.

Last year's Christmas idents were just bland and boring. The only good ident from that package was the Christmas tree one. I hope they have come up with something good this year. £5 billion a year budget the BBC has, they surely can found some cash to spend on their main channel? BBC Two needs its own Christmas idents this year too. Please God they do not do the same as in previous years.
