Does anybody know how the promo was actually made? I know there's a relatively modern trend of using CGI to create a stop motion effect, but I've read some claims it's genuine stop motion combined with CGI faces. Whether that's true or not, I don't know.

That info was contained in MetalGearRex's link, back on p.25, three days ago:

It's quite surprising how negative or mixed this forum has been about the look. It received a very warm response on Reddit with a lot of people praising the effort of the animation and the recognition of the struggle many single parents face in trying to weigh up their job with spending time with their kids. It's especially hard at this time of year during what is supposed to be a happy and festive time, when many 'traditional' families have big Christmas dinners or events which a lot of single parent households can't afford to have or attend. Especially at Christmas, single parents and their kids can really struggle, so it's nice that the BBC acknowledges them and puts them in the public's consciousness.

A lot of people here are comparing it to adverts from shops and are saying that this doesn't mean anything or say anything about the BBC's brand or programming. To that I say, does that really matter? At this time of year, the most important thing someone can do is spread joy, and if the BBC uses its idents and stings to do a little bit of that, I'd say their idents are encapsulating Christmas perfectly.

As for the people complaining that the BBC is trying to push diversity, well these families exist in real Britain too and they celebrate Christmas like you and I, so embrace them and welcome them to Christmas.

Good post, but I may be able to counter some of the points you raise. Most folk on here are TV Pres fans, they have the following of TV idents and presentation as their hobby. So, clearly they are going to see things from a different perspective. The package is nice, it is well made and well executed. I don't think that is the issue. And they certainly do consist of so much more effort than last years dull set. But, BBC1 is a brand. It is a TV channel with an identity crisis, it has no specific symbol in which to shout "I am BBC1 and our programmes this Christmas are great!" It has a 45 second jumbled mix of clips that primarily shows EastEnders and some other stuff. The programming should be the main focus because it's the programming that get people to watch. The promotional film this year is perfectly nice, I have said that, but is it BBC1's job to make us all think about single families? To make us aware of diversity? You shouldn't have to think about the meaning and concept of an ident, it should be self explanatory. An ident is a symbol for a channel, to let the viewers know what the channel is about, to promote it. You would be forgiven if you thought the film "The Supporting Act" was an appeal to ask for money to support a single family. Maybe some feel it's too politically motivated for Christmas. Why isn't the family white? There's no reason why they couldn't have been. It's a perfectly valid question. On the other hand, what is wrong with the family being non-white? I think that particular issue is irrelevant. There certainly are some who are getting worked up over the perceived skin colour of animated characters. The promo is like a John Lewis ad, posters are correct in that, but John Lewis ads are subtle in that they include products that they sell within them. This BBC1 ad has nothing to do with what is going to be on BBC1 during Christmas. TV pres fans will be far more analytical because of their expectations as to what TV pres should be.

I personally wish we could go back to 1987 style trails that had lovely music and animation but was solely about what BBC1 had to offer at Christmas but was Christmassey but focused on the channel as the primary cause.

However, I'm fully aware those days are gone and I actually do like the BBC1 Christmas presentation package. I don't overthink the meaning or worry - or notice - about ethnicity. It's just a father and daughter spending Christmas together. I didn't consider they were struggling, I didn't focus on what the storytelling was meant to reveal. I just looked at, thought "Aww, that's nice" andthen decided it was the best ident package since 2014 - the last time by the way, that the Christmas on BBC1 package was about "Christmas on BBC1" and the symbol of the channel was obvious. This post is intended to give you ideas as to why some on here are critical of it. I haven't detected much hate or ciondemnation to be honest, but mainly views that many feel BBC1 should and could do better. I think the general consensus though is that overall, the idents are not too bad. Remember, pres fans are going to be more critical and judgemental of things they have an interest in. For the posts that declare how wonderful everything about the diversity and hidden meaning is, that's what Digital Spy is for! Smile

If anyone has been unable to view the idents posted on YT over the last few pages (they were taken down by the BBC), here is a compilation of all five Christmas idents, as a substitute for the pulled videos.

I’m surprised the BBC take down idents!

I never have quite got the hang of the BBC management copyright argument on this. It's a promotion so you would think they would be pleased it's being noticed & promoted. Then there is the fact that we all own the BBC so they are our idents.
I suppose its just another little fiefdom chief being all protective of his little patch.

^ We, the tax payer, own much of one or two of the big banks when we bailed them out. Does this mean their money is ours? Smile

Yes, my upload of The Supporting Act was pulled down, but the idents and stings haven't.

You’re certainly lucky compared to me. All five of the idents I uploaded - all taken down manually by someone at the BBC and welp, one copyright strike until March.

I wonder if the whole copyright thing is more likely down to a special license agreement they've got in place for the Symphony music track rather than any particular attitude of the BBC themselves. They seem to have been acting a little more aggressively with the clips specifically for Christmas than they do on most of the usual pres, and the original press release seemed unusually specific around the wording and on how the full movie *must* be embedded by anyone reporting on it.

Let's see if post-Christmas all the BBC's own clips have their audio replaced by poorly sung renditions of songs like 'Ding Dong Merrily on High'! Very Happy

I am starting on my 10,000 word essay right now! Should be with you by Christmas 2019 - if you can be arsed to wait! Oh, the old fashioned wit and good natured sarcasm of TVForum is a joy to behold! Smile

I have one thing to say about this presentation. Stop trying to be diverse BBC, you make tons of people angry at how bad your attempts are.

People who get angry at diversity are called racists.

Or Susan Boyle. Wink
