The selection is much more limited than you think. Some would be nigh on impossible to modify into widescreen.

If it was to return could they not edit the stings and ident footage into a montage for each 'scene' to music and then introduce the logo full screen with a lovely animating background, in a similar way to the STV idents?

When they have launched on a Saturday, they have launched to introduce Strictly, with the exception of 2014 when they launched to introduce Atlantis. However, due to their being a decent Strctly ident, I think, and 'm, likely wrong, they'll use the junction into McIntyre to launch them.
