Is the music in this a real song by an artist or just produced in-house by the BBC? Just wondering...

I think you'll find that's Saviour's Day by Cliff Richard, but I'd have to check my Cliff back catalogue to be sure...

Well with the mention of Cliff, it had to be a curious download! But yep, I will go with you, it's Cliff's Saviour's Day in the background which was Christmas No 1 that year.

That isn't actually the theme that went with that logo, it's probably music from a menu and they just kept it going into the link.

Saviour's Day was BBC1's menu music at startup on Christmas Day 1990.

Although you can find some of the old Christmas ident tunes on commercial production CD's (took me years to discover them), the ident music in 1990 was especially produced.
