BBC1 may have made an effort, but personally I think the puddings ident is very cheap looking, but I do like the music. Last years snowflake children ident was very magical and well produced, the pudding ident just lacks something.

I don’t think ITV1’s current Christmas animation looks cheap at all, and even though it doesn’t directly relate to Christmas it has a very Christmassy feel. I cant wait to see the ident.

I love the BBC1 Christmas Idents. They're jolly, festive, camp, and extremely schmaltzy! Everything Christmas is supposed to be!

If BBC1 had used last year's again we'd all be complaining how mean they are! They have done new ones this year (albeit similar in style but nevertheless new!) and we are still moaning!

ITV will produce more P***poor idents like last year (even though everyone here said how fantastic they were which really is laughable because they were the usual celeb idents with some snowflakes added) and again everyone will say "Oh havn't ITV1 made a fantastic effort this year!" The answer is err, no!! They have some weird characters that to me have nothing to do with Christmas and actually look quite cheap!

Their best effort was the 2001 Christmas Eskimo ident.

Just enjoy the idents on BBC1 and have a merry Christmas! At least BBC1 have made the effort.

With reference to the news ident, why are we all worrying about its suitability to introduce news or serious programmes? Let's face it, unless anything major happens (heaven forbid) that's not really a problem either. If something major happens then the ident wouldn't be shown anyway. Christmas is a time for jollity, colour and festive fun. The BBC1 ident portrays all that.

blackcat, I thought the graphical ident was a copout too! The usual ITV1 logo with some snowflakes added. Not really an imaginative effort. The snowflake kids on BBC1 were far superior even though it was a re-use. Sorry, but I just thought ITV1's Christmas package last year was unimaginative.

The characters this year are just as cheap looking in my opinion. Sorry!

However, the scrooges of the year thus far, are NOT ITV1 as they have created new festive images, it is of course, BBC2.

Hmmm, where do i start? The ITV robin and eskimo idents from a few years back were very cheap and nothing special (imho!!) BUT I (and a hell of a lot of tv forum) thought the best Christmas Ident 2003 was the graphical ident on ITV1. The addition of a few floating snowflakes to the celebs wasnt very imaginative BUT it showed that they did make an effort at Christmas time by adding the snowflakes to a large selection of existing idents.

This year, so far, we have only seen a few short snippets of possible ident material for the Christmas Idents on ITV1 and you seem to be basing your views on that. I hope the network ITV1 Christmas Ident is nothing like UTV's as that is poor.
Examining the current Christmas promotions on ITV1 would suggest that there will be two different styles of Christmas Ident. One featuring the four light-bulb characters, a circle, a star, a triangle and a box moving around that bizarre landscape and also a more generic-type ident featuring ice as the background with programme details in a box with the Christmas light and four bulb characters moving down the right-hand side of the screen.

If my prediction is true I feel ITV1 have made more of an effort than BBC1(again!) IMHO the new BBC1 Christmas Idents are good but they come across as cheap - as if there's something missing but I cant put my finger on what. (Maybe its the music letting it down, or possibly airing them quite early.)

If the current Christmas Idents on BBC1 were made especially for CBBC1 etc, I would give them 10/10 as they suit childrens programming but I feel for more serious drama, and possibly news, they dont work and hopefully there is a new generic one still to come.

I can post my views on the BBC1 Christmas Idents as they are currently being shown and my views on the ITV1 Christmas Idents are based on examining the promotions, looking back at previous efforts and prediction!

I respect your views and appreciate your opinion. After all, that is the beauty of forums like this, if we all agreed all the time then the forum would be a dull place indeed.

I do agree with you about there being something missing from the BBC1 idents and I personally think you have hit the nail on the head by suggesting it's because they were aired early. I actually think they should have been saved back until Wednesday 22nd at 7pm, this I think would have made them more Christmassey and accepted as better by members here. Also, having them previewed on Friday on Blue Peter and then discussing them in depth prior to the launch sort of lost the spark!

I still believe though, they are good and cheesey and ideal for Christmas, and as it is Christmas, we should not really worry too much about the quality of them. There is virtually hardly any serious programming on after Tuesday on BBC1 so the relevance of them introducing serious programmes is virtually non existent. All other dramas were made specifically for Christmas so in a way fits in with the current Christmas package.

I am persuaded by your well put views however, to wait until ITV1 launch their ident probably on Christmas eve before I criticise it, and if it is good, I will admit to it. However, I still do not like the jelly babies on speed style characters as it looks like a rush job, which, incidentally, BBC1's ident also was considering it was filmed in a day last month.

On the subject of BBC1 Christmas idents, for me, the most cosy, Christmassey and magical one of recent times was the superb 2001 Christmas scene with the wonderful balloon floating outside by the window! That will be hard to beat! Anyway, keep up the good discussions, it's always interesting to read other peoples viewpoints.

Thanks Steve, for an honest and great response. I cannot disagree with anything you have stated in your post and its awful when people have to agree with each other (LOL)
I also have to agree that the BBC balloon and especially the Christmas version was one of the most memorable Christmas Idents of all time! Whilst mentioning past great Christmas Idents - I think one of the main reasons that the ITV1 Christmas Generic Ident from last year was rated so highly was that all other channels were so poor or a repeated version from a previous year !(or didnt even bother)

Historically for ITV each ITV region used to make it's own Christmas Ident or in the latter years used to adapt a network verison.(ie stick a robin/eskimo/fairy on that years 'normal' ident!!!)
Currently all resources are now put into making one ITV1 Christmas Ident version (and a Wales version) and so we should expect much more from ITV1 than we did in the past! Lets hope this year's is something special!

Does anyone know when ITV intend to start showing the Christmas presentation?

Anyone else spotted the two kids bumping into each other at the beginning of the ident? You can see them throughout the next two weeks in the top right hand corner of your screen.

Sad to say, this was probably the best take of the lot. Suppose this is what you get when you get bouncing children (lets face it, that's all it is) to be the image of the world's most prestigious tv channel (can we say that any more?).

The ident has only been shown for two days now, and it's already starting to become innocuous. It doesn't grab my attention anymore. Although I quite like the audio, I have a feeling it's will be driving me insane come Boxing Day.

May I take this opportunity to proudly announce that it's my first birthday here on TV Forum. I registered as a new member after seeing the BBC Chistmas idents 2003 on the evening of Saturday 20th December. I was furious when I saw the snowflake ident again - so much so I wanted to express it on the world wide web. I know, nobody cares. Just seems like 5 minutes ago rather then 1 year - now I'm 1 year closer to my grave.

Here's a paradox for you.
If Every second I get one year closer to my grave (ie. every second it's a year later than it was a year ago, hence it's a year closer to the time I die) and I live for 70 years....surely I'm living for little over a minute?

Funny because I did a mock jingle for the xmas idents a few months back. They sound very similar i must admit. Would love to see a French and Saunders spoof on these xmas idents! They're not on this Christmas are they?
